Platinum plus left us in a pickle

I posted the response below in a different thread. My biggest issue was that they would get our car but not us. Is it usual for good Sam to take the vehicle only??
Also, do we need specify that we want to use the 100 mile tow?
Who would have paid for a taxi? Us or good Sam?
Given there would not have been a shop open until Tuesday where we were taken, would they have come back the next day to get the van on the same call or would it have been an additional call?

The situation:

We had our first use of platinum plus Saturday and I have rarely encountered such poor service. We had a borrowed phone and the csr was unable to find us on his map, even after being given the mile markers. When I explained the owner of the phone had an appointment and needed to leave and could he confirm what company was coming and that we could ride with the tow truck, he said they would get the trailer and tow vehicles, but we were on our own for getting off the rise of the road. I explained I had two young children and my older disabled daughter and no phone, he reiterated that they could not give use a ride. We were 8 miles from cell service and the nearest town on the side of the road in southern Arizona. I ask for a supervisor. He put me on hold and came back telling me he could transfer me to membership services to workout a taxi with them. I again said the man who stopped with the working phone needed to leave and I needed good Sam to figure this out. He said he couldn't help with the ride. Luckily, highway patrol showed up and they took my wife and 6 year old to a rest area with cell service where she tried to find help. After 2.5 hours, Good Sam found a wrecker from a city 40 miles south (we were headed 40milea north). It was way more than needed and they were only authorized to tow and leave us at an rv park 8 miles south in a very small town. We had a family memeber that drove to shuttle the people from the break down to the rv park. Sunday, I called AAA and they helped me find and open shop and took my van there. My van was repaired and we were back in the game by 3pm. The only benefit of the call to good Sam was they got us a spot at the park. However, had they taken us 40 miles north, we would have been at the park with our reservation. As a platinum plus memeber, they should have taken us as it was well short of the 100 mile limit. I suggest you go elsewhere for roadside coverage. Because, had your phone not worked, you really would have been screwed.

  • I tried the GS Road side and had a bad experience also. I returned to AAA Premier and have had excellent service for years.

Unfortunately, the only thing platinum about Good Sam assistance is the premium you pay for it. And Marcus couldn't care less. Prove me wrong. Team responses are knee jerk and canned. Information is shufled from one rep to another and little or nothing is resolved. Those who disagree have most likely not experienced the use of the service.
Its simply a sad sad case of affairs at Good Sam and affiliates. Its about
Profit only. $$$$ Your crisis is not the issue, the guidelines are the issue.

My experience with AAA is quality response, head and shoulders above GS.
And contrary to a comment , my 3 children and myself were tranported with our vehicle to a repair facility, then us to a motel. Then next day , vehicle and family again to ford dealer for repair , and rental vehicle paid and hotel and meals for 2 days. It took only one letter to AAA to get it all paid. Thats Service !!!

Sounds like you were able to use the "trip interruption service" (GS and CN offer this also). Or your letter caused them to reimburse you for non-covered expenses (GS has done this also for folks).

I don't think there is one plan that is better than the rest. I think they all have strong and weak points. IMHO, the weakest point of GS are the operators. AAA is good, but what you get can vary greatly depending on where you are located. Personally, I carry two plans at all times - makes my odds of getting assistance that much better regardless of where I am, what time of day it is, etc.

They did it again! I had to use their service few weeks ago. This was just my truck and this occurred in Austin. I had to wait by the truck for almost 2 hours. There are many tow trucks, but I had to wait 2 hours just for that one tow truck?! On top of that, I have to stay with it. I could not leave the truck and let the tow truck get it. Grr. Seems like I should change to triple AAA.

I have had GREAT SERVICE with my AAA Premier RV Plus.
Towed my Truck,on a big flatbed, and towed my 5th wheel ....on EVEN BIGGER truck.

You have to be with the vehicle for AAA also. Depending on where you are AAA may not help either. The service is club dependent

Yes, if there are more people in the vehicle than can fit in the tow truck, then they can't take you with the vehicle. Other transportation has to be arranged.

Yes, you have to specify you want to use the 100 mile tow AND you have to tell them where you want to be towed to.

Roadside assistance (any company) does not pay for alternative transportation. If a taxi is required, it is at your expense.

They should deliver your vehicle to the shop under the same call under these circumstances (no shop open due to holiday weekend).
