Tire repair (not)

(not so) Good Sam’s Road Service….I had an interesting experience with Good Sam’s the other day. I went out to start getting my Class A ready for our trip to warmer weather and found that one of my back tires was flat. (my last trip in August). I called Sam’s for a roadside repair, which I have done before, but, it was not to be this time. The dispatcher told me that the only service that they have to offer me was to change to my spare or a complete tire replacement. They “no longer” offer tire repair service on any RV’s. (My tires are only 4 years old and I would replace the tire if the repairman determined it was unsafe.) So, I asked the dispatcher what that would cost me, she called me back 30 minutes later with a quote: My tire size is 245/70 19.5, the price was $524.95 for the tire and $241.03 mounting, service, and taxes, $765.95 total. Also, I had to pay Good Sam’s, they would pay the service company. (Can you read big markup.) I passed.

I pulled my jacks and compressor out the lot, removed the tire and took it to a local truck tire dealer to have it checked. He could find nothing wrong with the tire but a very slow leak in the valve stem. They replaced the stem and rechecked the tire, three hours later it was back on the RV and ready to go. By the way, the dealer charged me nothing, $0, not ta. His price on the tires for my RV, $225 to $350 depending on the brand. Guess where my next tires will come from….

I have had Good Sam’s for years and have used them a few times with good luck, but I don’t think I’ll be renewing this summer or recommending the service.

Sitting on the side of the roadway with fast moving vehicles zooming by paying top dollar for tire/labor is 'safer' and all though cost is inflated it only becomes an issue AFTERWARDS.

Wonder what your local truck tire dealer would have charged for 'mobile--on site' service....IF they even would have responded :H

Been there. done that on the berm with traffic whizzing by at 70 per and it was a driver's side flat.. and I changed it myself with skinned up elbows and a dirty shirt and pants and a bad attitude afterwards. Great way to ruin a camping trip.

But then I'm cheap and I do catty a spare and I make sure it's inflated too.
  • Thank you for the post tkinrade. We apologize for any confusion regarding the Good Sam Roadside Assistance benefits.

Your Good Sam Roadside Assistance membership does not recommend, provide or coordinate tire repair services. Good Sam’s primary concern is the safety of our members, their traveling companions, and RV.

If we receive a call requesting service for valve stems your Good Sam Roadside membership does provide benefits for the delivery and replacement of faulty valve stems and valve cores. Members are responsible for the costs associated with parts, dismounting/mounting and replacement labor the same as they would be in a shop. Good Sam covers the cost of the service call and mileage.

If you have additional questions please feel free to send me a private message with your membership info and the phone number you'd like to be contacted at.

    Thank you,

    Zach
  • For emergency and/or roadside replacement I am not sure GS was out of line. GS prices are not a secret. And your first and second posts are complaints about our host.
  • I'm sorry, my card says "roadside assistance" not "emergency only". I was by the road and needed assistance. By the way, I did try to inflate it.
  • Next time - try re-inflating the tire - if it holds drive to the nearest tire outlet and have them check out the tire. Just a thought.
