WARNING: Good Sam "pay when you go" RV insurance

The October issue of Motorhome arrived today and the outer cover was an advertisement for Good Sam RV Insurance using the headline "See how much you can SAVE with "pay when you go" RV insurance? This sounds really good and it was also offered in past years. I bought my coach in January 2014 and bought the GS insurance through National General Insurance Group. When I was arranging the insurance, I asked for details on savings when I had the coach stored. The agent told me all about those savings but then added that I should check with my state to make sure the storage option was legal. It happened the agent was in Missouri and I live in Missouri so I figured she was giving me a clue on this matter. I emailed the state motor vehicle office asking about the legality of dropping my liabilty insurance while my RV was in storage. Here is the answer I received:

"As long as you have valid registration (plates) on the motor home, you must carry at least the liability minimums, even if the unit is in storage and you do not use it.
However, if you surrender the plates during the time the unit is in storage you are not required, by our office, to maintain the minimum liability insurance on the unit. If your insurance coverage goes below the Missouri minimums, you may be penalized, even if the unit is in storage and not in use."

In the small print under the advertisement is the statement that 'Availability, eligibility, ..........may vary by state and carrier"

But the point is - don't leap before you look and do check with your state motor vehicle folks before asking for the pay when you go insurance option. GS should be ashamed to putting out this kind of advertising without making it clear that some states do no allow such an option.

  • I had GS insurance on my KZ and in Sept. put it into 'storage mode' like that. But when I next wanted to travel it was June, and I almost forgot to have it removed from storage mode (full coverage restored). On the evening before leaving I remembered, so I called and had to leave a message, then tried emailing too, but never got a reply assuring me that I was fully covered until several days into my vacation. I never want to go through that hassle again. If I had never remembered in time and then an accident occurred, I would have been SOL.

    Bill,
All you need to do is turn your tags in when you want to store the vehicle. Then go re-apply for another tag when ready to camp. Afraid you will find many states have this requirement.
that sounds convenient. Take time out of work, head down the the DMV, wait upwards to several hours for your number, pay to register your vehicle again.

    Makes for a "happy" rv'er. :S
  • Couple of items
    A) Good Sam replied ' Our licensed agents specialize in RV insurance coverage and are able to provide specific information for your situation based on where you live, carrier, vehicle type etc. which is why the agent you spoke with advised you to ensure that it was an option in your state.'
SO if I read the reply correctly the agent is supposed to know what is needed based on what state I am in BUT the customer should call his state DMV to make sure the agent is correct because the agent does not know for sure?

    2) State farm does this for customers they call it withdrawn from use; for example I have an auto I do not drive in the winter I call the State Farm agent and tell them I have withdrawn the unit from use. State Farm DRASTICALLY reduces the liability portion of my premium and I do not have to turn in plates because as far as the state is concerned I still have coverage.
  • Aside from what MV state laws may apply in this situation, don't all financial institutions require full coverage at all times,if a contract is in force? A few years ago I wanted to drop insurance coverage on my Harley, during the winter months only (clear title). I called my agent, of whom I've been with for the past 32 years to inquire about doing this, he said sure, BUT, we cannot re-instate the policy for that vehicle at the end of that period, I would have to find another insurance provider for it.

  • That all sounds very nice Robyn but the agent I talked to told me specifically that agents are not aware of the requirements of each state but I should definitely (and she emphasized the definitely) check with my state MV folks. I still contend that this advertisement is very misleading in that it does not specifically state in equally large print that this option is not available in all states. It would be very easy for someone to buy it without checking with their state MV people and later finding out they were in violation of state law. Things like this are making me check out other insurance companies at renewal time.
  • Hi Bill,
Thank you for your feedback. As you know insurance regulations vary from state to state and benefits can be different depending on the carrier. It wouldn't be possible to include all of the differences within an ad which is why we have the general disclosure. Our licensed agents specialize in RV insurance coverage and are able to provide specific information for your situation based on where you live, carrier, vehicle type etc. which is why the agent you spoke with advised you to ensure that it was an option in your state.

If you would like to discuss any additional concerns you may have, please fell free to send me a private message or contact me at the email address in my signature.

    Thank you,
    Robyn Barnes
