RV Tourism in Mexico

Every season there are posters who think that this year RV tourism is increasing. As much as we would all like to think it is recovering the truth is it sucks! Today, El Imparcial has an article on the loss of trailer parks in San Carlos. There are quotes from the Tourist and Convention people with statistics. They used to have a thousand RV tourists in SC. Now it is maybe 150. Kino is very similar. They also mention that the RV'rs would return every year and eventually buy a house. The article also mentions the impact on the local economy. I can remember when you needed a reservation to get a spot in Kino. Not now. According to that article they blame the perception of insecurity.

  • My 2 centavos, this board is about Rv's I get that. I work in the RV community with my wife to a great degree. I'm not a writer so my story may not be perfectly written.

We have had a huge increase in tourism in Mexico for the last 3 years. None of it has to do with the RV community. Dollars that used to be spent on attracting Rvers has been reassigned to other sectors. The social make up of the Rv community has changed as well. It is normal to pay 60, 70 100, per night for a luxo spot somewhere in the states? Never will happen here. Price of gas and diesel got you down? You are more apt to stay close to home. Fears of being kidnapped for your 100,000.00 rig got you worried? Probably not worth risking going to Mexico.

    Lol (laugh out loud......)

There are a lot of things going on right now that make other places more inviting than Mexico when you are cruising around in a 30,000 lb piece of equipment. Flying in, driving in, cruising in are all other forms of travel to Mexico. The tourist market is strong, but we wish more of you (rvers) would come on down. Congrats to those that have, and have the beaches to themselves.

Life is great south of the border. If you have the $$ for fuel you oughta make the trip! By the way just got back from shrimp and beer at my favorite beach club in Peñasco!
  • dkilley: Rv sales are booming. If travel is down what are people doing with their Rv's? Camping world is desperate for people to deliver RV's. The factories are running longer shifts. Thank you for mentioning the high cost of travelling in Mexico.
  • We were at Cerittos RV park in Mazatlan last night and they were full. There are 7 lots left that are not sold. I am not sure if that is common or not for this place as we only stop there twice a year and only for one night each stop.
  • One contributing factor could be the high cost of fuel and tolls. We drive down every year and every year we complain about the high cost of getting there compared to flying down and renting a nice condo on the beach for a lot less money. One day we will STOP driving and fly down, but we will probably always go to Mexico as long as our health holds out. RV travel in general is down across the USA. RV rallies are not attended in numbers as in past years, so it filters down to rv travelers to mexico. I for one think this is the beat place on earth to spend my winters.
  • Please do not start another thread on safety in Mexico. I was only repeating what was in the article. Personally I think there are many factors affecting RV tourism in Mexico. Many Americans stopped coming in 07/08 when the economy in the USA tanked. Many RV'rs want to stay in parks with good power, decent water pressure and modern facilities. Some are bothered by the paperwork at the border. There are other barriers: no ULSD, high tolls, mordida. Of course the regulars on this board are so used to these barriers it becomes no big deal!

  • Are you saying the perception of insecurity isn't true? I have loved Mexico in the past and would love to camp there, but I'm not sure sure I'd be able to sleep. I KNOW the media makes things worse than they are in most incidences. My SIL is in Australia.....they think we (the USA) have school shootings every day. :(
