Just got back from from 1600 miles round trip, stopped for the last gas and at the bottom of the offramp, it's got a miss in it on Idle in gear and on acceleration from the light.. I didn't feel anything before then. Mostly because I was into a headwind and staying on the gas. Idles good with a slight miss. Give it gas while in gear and it shudders.Drove it home another 80 miles. Now noticing loss of power. Some times the miss goes away a few seconds, then comes right back. Same with making the last stops at the lights before home on the streets. Sometimes Idles smooth then right back to missing. So 2007 Itasca Spirit E450 V10 15,000+ miles. Bad coil packs already?

I don't know if all the coils are directly attached to the spark plugs, or if there is a wire. I had a friend complain that he had some spark plug wires replaced recently, and although all the spark plug cables are only about 3" long, some are 'long' while others are 'short'. Even though all are within 1/4" of each other.So what was happening with his car was the spark was not reaching the plug properly. He has coil packs on his car too. So the next mechanic could tell what wires where short, and has spark burn marks on the end of them. You can take the RV to a Auto Zone or many other parts stores, and ask to borrow a code reader. Usually they will allow you to borrow it for a few minutes. It should tell you what cylinder is not firing correctly, or what might be wrong with it.My 5.4L Ford work van had a leak on the coolant line going to the intake manifold, and that also zapped out one of the coil packs. They did not find it until the second one went out in a week. Good luck!Fred.

Do you have a check engine light on? When I've had coil packs go bad I've gotten a flashing CEL on acceleration, and reading the code confirmed a misfire in the affected cylinder. I'm not sure why you think you have a bad coil pack. You mentioned you had just gotten gas and it started running poorly right after. Just a wild guess, but I would rule out problems related to bad fuel before replacing any parts.

the coils are the weak point in ford modular engines. Looking at the top of the coil you usually see a crack in the potting which allows moisture to get in. You can find the bad one by removing the supply wire one at a time which will show a decrease in RPM for each good one and none for the bad one. A 6mm socket is all you need to replace it. I buy them on ebay for about 8 bucks each and keep a spare or two in the glovebax with the socket. Also I have never gotten a check engine light when one died. The loss of 1 cyl in a v10 can feel like the engine is jumping out of the truck

Thanks for all the replies.

Bought a reader, found a previous code PO300 ( misfire ) and Active PO300 and PO309 (misfire and Misfire on #9 cylinder) Ran to AutoZone and bought a Coil pack and started the replacement. It wasn't too bad for being the #9 -fourth one back on the left.
Had to pull the Air filter and housing to get the bolt off the front of the Wire harness and Then pull the dog house and the rear bolt on the wire harness.
Then weasel in for the coil pack bolt and unclip the wire plug.
It looked like I was going to have to pull the fuel rail for a second, But the coil is pretty flexible to bend around it and then pull it out.

Back out on the Road Friday for a much needed Camp out at the Lake !

I had the same engine shudder at about 35k miles. Had to replace 4 coils.

Yes, for those wondering/speculating, the Ford V10, the 5.4, 4.6 and at least some of the V6's are all "COP" meaning "Coil On Plug." There are as many coils as there are cylinders. No high voltage spark plug or coil wires. Each coil is triggered by a low voltage pulse from the PCM/Powertrain Control Module.

if each spark plug has its own coil on top. ? I did here a rumor that number 1 cyc plug failed more than the others ,just a story I heard no facts.

I had one go bad and there wasn't a CEL. I checked for codes anyway and found that there was a code stored for a miss on one of the cylinders. If you find a code, then you know exactly which cylinder is the problem without any trial and error monkeying around. I replaced mine with an OEM part from RockAuto. I don't enjoy replacing them enough to go with a cheap coil.
