12v power out after installing new Trombetta relay

i installed a new Trombetta relay in my 2002 Fleetwood expedition and now 12v power is out. I put the old one back in and all is still dead. The mh will start and run but drive? The step is out so I would have to drive to repair shop with the step out. I killed the 12v power to the coach with the coach and house switches prior to the work. Now switches seem dead. Is there a jump procedure I should go through? Thanks for any help.

  • Glad you got it fixed. Nothing wrong with paying for a few lessons.
  • I'm a bit red faced as I write this, the RV tech fixed my problem yesterday...I had crossed up the heavy 12v cables leaving the coach dead. I must have said no way, or that's impossible a dozen times. He left me with some advice, he said he always color tapes the cables prior to removal so he won't mix them up later. Good advise for me. Thanks for your help.
  • Measure the voltage on the little terminals. If you can tell which lead goes to ground that is even better. You need voltage on one and ground on the other. If you do not have voltage on one and zero volts on the other then your control voltage is not there and probably popped a fuse during install.

So lets assume you have a popped fuse and need to get things going. By knowing which little terminal needs voltage you can just use a light jumper (alligator clip) to connect the little terminal to the large one that has battery voltage. When doing this you will probably jump due to the clunk of the solenoid. Do not be touching the bare ends of the jumper because there is a voltage spike that can surprise you. It will not hurt you except jumping out of the way.
  • Wandere, I used those two switches to cut off power prior to replacing the relay. When finished with installing the new relay I returned to the switches and all 12v is dead. I put old relay back on....still dead. Thanks.
  • Hey I see you are a new member. Have you owned a Rv before? I am just trying to cover bases. There should be a disconnect switch neat the steeps that should power the relay. If you know this I am just trying to cover the basic.
  • Yes, the left side heavy cable has power on it before and after the swap with the new Trombetta relay. Im not traveling right now so I don't need a temporary fix. My question about jumping was meant to be a way to get it working properly. Thanks.
  • Check the Heavy wire on the relay. one side should have power on it. That would be the battery side of the relay if you are not on shore power. It could be jumped over and that should give you the house power. If you have no 12 volt power on either side of the heavy wires on the relay that I would check the main fuse on the battery. I believe this should get you going. Gary
