1991 P30 454 intermittent surging, power loss

Hi everyone,
I just bought this 91 Damon Challenger P30 454 TBI and it has this intermittent issue at slower speeds. It doesn't do it all the time.

It idles fine, has trouble accelerating, power loss, massive engine speed surging while driving, and an occasional backfire through the intake. If I shut the engine down for 10 minutes, it may run perfectly fine. Air filter looks new, and both injectors are spraying.

Strange issue, I am stumped. Please help.
  • Fuel pump is in the tank. Hard to find assembly which includes fuel gauge sending unit.
Fuel filter is located on the right-side frame rail in front of the rear tires.
Fuel filter would be first thing to change.
1/2 in socket with about six in extension to loosen bracket.
Be prepared for fuel pressure to be release once lines are disconnected. About a cup is normal.
  • I'd start with a new fuel filter. If that doesn't do it next up would be the fuel pump.

I'm not well versed on the vintage Chevy so it may have an in-tank pump with the filter attached.

If it does, I'd replace them both at the same time.

What you're describing is exactly what our '90 Ford chassis did and the above fixed ours. Adding a Banks kit didn't hurt either. We used the smaller kit, the one that kept the factory manifolds.
