1993 Allegro Bay

Hello;

New here. Don't have an RV yet. I know someone that has a 1993 Allegro Bay, gas, 34', i believe. Around 55K miles. Looks to be solid though dated. I do believe all systems are working, AC, Heat lights, electrics. Engine runs good. He doesn't use it and i could get it for $3000. Interior doesn't bother me. i am a carpenter, mostly finish, and though I have never remodeled an RV, I have worked on a number of trailers, and am pretty sure I can handle it. I am also fairly good as a mechanic, but have no idea what might be in store on this rig.
With not much more data, what do you more experienced people think of buying this RV. What should I really look at as a deal killer. Are there many improvements that can be made to improve ride, handling, etc, or is it better to try and save more money and buy something else. Part of the allure is having a project for the winter, customizing the interior to my liking.
Thanks for any help and input

  • Keep in mind that RVs have different construction for 2 reasons. First is weight. 2X4s are nice, strong and heavy. That is the main reason you don't find them in an RVs. RV chassis are built with weight limits and it is not good to overload the chassis for safety as well as convenience. most people find they overload the older chassis when packing for a trip. I wouldn't worry about the age. As you can see I have nothing against older RVs.
  • Carefully look for stains on the ceiling, pay attention to areas inside cabinets. 3K is a good deal as long as it hasn't leaked. It's had 2 1/2 decades to do so and if it has, and rot has started, even free can be way too much....
  • Welcome to the forum. It sounds like you can handle the repairs. However, consider hiring a mobile RV Tech to inspect the unit. They will know what to check. It will be money well spent and a learning experience for you.

    And, check the age of the tires. Many change tires at 6-10 years on their RV.
    RV tires usually age out before they wear out.

    Keep us updated and don't hesitate to ask questions on the forum. Someone will have the answer.

    Let us know which engine/chassis is under the Allegro. That can help us tell you any pros/cons.
  • look for water damage ceiling, around windows, floors
    if there is NO rot anywhere it should be solid

    plan on new belts, new fluids oil coolant and trans

    possibly new vent covers, and plumbing vents on roof etc..

    nothing major, just bits and pieces of plastic that age and will break and leak while on that first camping trip ... or the second, just luck of the draw
  • For three grand with everything working and no water issues, yes. How old are the tires? Plan on changing all fluids. 60 nights of camping you'll be ahead.
