89A to 89 to Flagstaff - is it Class A friendly road

I will be traveling from Fredonia to Flagstaff on 89A to 89.

Are these roads class A friendly, towing a tahoe ?
  • What we found on 89A is since it's a rolling hil road most of the way, there are a lot of no passing zones. We were stuck behind a slow moving camper, but after several unsuccessful attempts to pass, we decided to just settle in and enjoy the scenery.
  • "At Jacob Lake you'll be in a lovely pine forest. (no lake here, by the way)"

Actually... there is a "Jacob Lake" we went looking for it years ago and frankly drove right by it without noticing the smallish, muddy pond with a weather beaten sign reading "Jacob Lake".

This was down an old dirit/gravel road and when we saw it after driving another 5 miles before turning around we laughed our butt's off. Might be completely dried up by now as this all took place almost 9 years ago.

  • Yes; Steep downhill after Jacob Lake on 89A. Use lower gears and you should not have a problem.
  • Yes they are and many do it.... no other way to get to Flagstaff.

89 is almost flat to Page, AZ. After leaving Page you'll see a truck sign to "check brakes & to use lower gear next 5 miles". The grade down with be a 6% for about 4 miles. There's a runaway truck ramp.

89A - From Fredonia you'll have a easy uphill. At Jacob Lake you'll be in a lovely pine forest. (no lake here, by the way) Then you have a descent down to desert. The descent is around 10 miles of 5-6% with curves. It's a good road. Before the descent there's an extremely wide scenic pull-off on the right. Stop and take in the view! We've done both in both directions. No problem with our 40' motorhome.
