A macerating toilet

Your resourcefullness has no limits! Now you are taking your GWV on the ferry to DR. Have a great holiday whether you have your RV along with you or not?? The BIDET is superior(green) to inefficient toilet paper(small recepticle for wipes should be availalble. Septic/sewer systems suffer from Western practices--but dont push the button if standing and looking over the toilet--did that in Tokyo and go a facial wash(to say the least)...

I've looked at this macerator toilet as well as a composting toilet someone else suggested to me. I guess I still like old fashioned tried and true gravity. :)

The macerating toilet looks rather complex. What happens with an electrical failure or a blade clog? The only plus I see is the ability to place it anywhere you want away from a tank. In a Class B that is not all that critical at least in the Sprinter. I'd still want a separate black tank from a grey tank mainly for clean sanitation in dumping. I will get a macerator but will have the option to do the standard 3" slinky hose two valve (grey and black) gravity dump. My black tank will be 18 gallons which is an increase from my Great West Van Legend 10 gallon tank. We go about 4 days between dumps now with our 10 gallon and it is coupled with grey tank fill and fresh water fill fairly well. So all three are usually taken care of on the same day at a campground. My fresh water will increase from 29 gallons to 40 gallons and my grey will increase from 20 to 28 in our ordered Advanced RV Sprinter. I think that all will increase dumping chores to weekly.

The composting toilet seems like an extra maintenance chore. Where do you get coconut fiber and where do you easily get peat? Where do you dispose of compost on the road? You still have grey water and fresh water chores and they don't seem to be in synch with composting chores. Back to square one. I like to take care of all three at the same time at a planned stop.

isn't that what I have on my TT, a removeable macerator hooked onto the dump outlet? if something goes haywire, just pull off the macerator and drag out the stinky slinky. much harder to do I would think on a macerator built into a toilet?

I can't pull the macerator out of my Roadtrek if it fails. It is an installed part of the plumbing under the van with both tanks and tank valves connecting to it. There is a "clean out" that can be opened but that results in everything in the tanks just pouring directly out to the ground immediately below. (Look out if you are under there getting the clean out open.) There is no connection for a hose. So there is no option to pull out the macerator and dragging out a hose. So what I stated related to permanently installed macerators with no option for a gravity dump.

Well, one of the benefits of the macerating toilet is that you do not need a straight down drop into the black tank. It pumps the waste through a flexible hose.

So, in theory, you could have the toilet toward the side of the rig, yet still mount the black tank along the centerline, if you were worried about weight distribution.

I believe some of the Leisure Travel Vans Unity models use a macerating toilet for this reason.

Also, the Thetford ones will include a set volume of water with each flush & fill. This can help ensure that you've got enough water going into the black tank, which could be useful if some in your party are prone to not using enough H2O.

Or less to go wrong, no more holding tank problems, everything is liquid. They use the macerator toilets on ships, and boats with good success. They have also been installed in Class A's.
Anyway I just thought it was interesting, some people find fault with anything that gets posted these days.

This was recently talked about on a Roadtrek group. The macerating toilet combined with the permanent macerator dump system would supposedly eliminate the problems that are encountered with the permanent macerator and the tanks sensors. The black tank would then hold only liquids. Of course, there are other things that will foul a macerator including hair going down a drain and wrapping around the impeller. It is an interesting idea - but then why not just have a gravity system that is easily accessible with the ability to add an add on macerator - this resolves all problems except false sensor readings.

Ah, more "new" stuff !

Back when I was a kid, in the 50's, my folks had a Spartan trailer with a mace raton toilet in it. Now, I don't really the logic to it, but maybe it would it less susceptible to stopping up sewer lines if connected directly without a holding tank ? I'd do a vacu-flush system first, worked great on the boat.
