Accessing the top & cab-over to reseal?

At some point I'm probably going to buy a small C. I expect to do most of the house maintenance myself, being fairly hand at such things.

My biggest concern is safe access to the top and cab-over for the essential inspection and re-sealing. I'm in pretty decent shape but have never been really "nimble" or adept at climbing around on things. The last thing I need is a bad fall.

What is the best safe way to reach the seams and roof penetrations?

I'm trying to think these things through, so I don't buy something I can't manage.

I use the ladder permanently attached to the back of my class C. Easy-peasy. Avoiding falling off the roof is, of course, a matter of being cautious and generally safe about doing work.

The built-in ladders are not always the most sturdy ladders in the world; a relatively heavy person might want something a little more sturdy and secure.
  • I'm thinking that one of the Little Giant systems would work well. It separates into sections that make a sturdy scaffold platform. You can also have a 45 degree setup that lets one side go vertical so you can work close to a vertical surface.
  • Thanks for the tip on Siennachat. There is lots of good info there. I bought my Sienna used, and did have the dealer do a tranny fluid change, and change the timing belt. Otherwise my local mechanic is good. But very little maintenance, I love the Sienna.
  • I used a ladder for the cabover area. My cabover has an escape hatch vent, so I can pop that open and stand up through it to check the roof and reseal around the escape hatch.

For the rest of the roof, I used s ladder for all the edges, then laid across the roof to reach the areas further towards the middle.

None of it was very "comfortable" as I have a fear of heights, but I could do it without too much stress and without feeling that I was pushing my luck with the ladder.
  • There is a thread on this somewhere in the archives. People have used cherry picking ladders with an extra leg that can stabilize the ladder from on side of the cab. One guy made a wooden scaffold stretching across side to side with crosspieces just over the hood and higher up. Half the work if you can park beside a wall.

I reached down from the roof and used a ladder leaning on the cabover a couple of times but I've only had a C for 7 years.

I see you have a .sienna, too. Our 2004 Sienna is still going strong. Just learned not to hire the dealer for "changing the transmission fluid" - it drains out just like changing engine oil and there is no filter to replace. Recommend Siennachat.com.

    I recommend Siennachat.com.
