Add rear-facing camera to Sony B&W Monitor

New to this forum...recently purchased a 2002 Monarch Windsor 38-PBD in great shape. Some tweaks I want to do, one of which is to add a rear-facing camera as a back up camera. The original Sony (SSM-721AMR) unit has a camera that looks at the towed vehicle...not as rear-looking as I want in a back up camera.

Any thoughts on how to go about this would be appreciated.
  • Well, this camera is not adjustable...so far as I can tell.

I removed the two screws holding the housing to the coach body, then found four allen screws holding the camera to the housing. I loosened all four and tried moving the camera inside the housing, and it moved not a bit. . So put it all back together and am now going to investigate installing another camera. Not entirely sure what that will entail, but likely a parallel system to the existing black & white original system.
  • Thanks Fred. I was able to remove two screws from the glass cover and pull the camera housing part way out. There are two allen screws on each side...of course I didn't have the right allen wrench with me on top of that ladder. But I thought I'd try to see if I could loosen the screws and then change the angle of the camera. The monitor accepts two inputs, but I don't know where I'd find a camera that would match that 18-year old technology. I like your idea though.

I'll check that out...thanks. The camera is recessed behind a glass cover and I didn't see if it could be could be adjusted, but that certainly would resolve the issue. Thanks again.
    .

My experience is in replacing the camera on a 2000 Holiday Rambler, and your situation may be different.

I think you will find that camera behind the glass cover is not adjustable. I removed the old camera from the housing (held in by massive amounts of caulk) and replaced with a new color camera mounted in the old housing...still only gives view of towed car. Also mounted a second camera on top of the old camera housing. I then ran two new cables down and under the coach and up to a new color monitor that had two video inputs. If you source parts from Ebay or Amazon, it is not that expensive.

When I did this install, I documented it with pictures on the IRV2 forum. Log into IRV2...select more..click files...find electrical section...select Rear View Cameras (2) & Monitor Install on page 3.
Note that you have to login to IRV2 to be able to download the file.

    Good luck with your project.

    Fred
  • There has to be a way to access the camera. If there are no external screws you might look inside for a hidden panel behind the camera.

  • loosen the screws and push up as post by DrewE. If you have a cover on yours remove the cover if held on with screws.
  • Can you reposition the existing camera to point more backwards and less downwards?
