Air Bag Installation Assistance

I will be installing the Firestone Ride Rite air bag helper springs on my coach on all 4 corners. I will also be installing the compressor unit with wireless quad controller.

The instructions leave a bit to be desired. I am not readily able to discern which wiring harness or which color wires go to which valve block or which pressure sensor. In other words, which wire controls which corner?

Anybody with experience installing them that can save me from the dreaded trial and error of plugging/unplugging and connecting/disconnecting once I find that when I press on the left front button to inflate, I actually inflate the right rear? ;-)

Thanks!
  • Since you're dealing with an electrical/electronic item please post as many details concerning the controller as possible. Make, model, revision, pictures and such. Information overload when requesting assistance can be a good thing. What is difficult to describe might be easier with an image.

When I installed the bags and compressor on my coach I went with manual paddle valves and just ran air lines as needed.
  • Firestone Quad Controller

Sorry...should have thought about that before I posted. It's the Firestone standard duty compressor and wireless Quad Controller model 2500. There are 2 separate valve blocks, one for front and one for rear, that allow control of each corner bag separately (left and right air output ports on each valve block along with 2 pressure sensors). Coming from the ECU module, there are 2 plugs, one for each of the valve blocks (I assume that one controls the front valve block and the other controls the rear valve block). There are also 8 separate wires, different colors, one for each terminal on the pressure sensors. There is no different marking for each valve block or for the pressure sensors. I would have thought, even though they are the same parts, since it's sold as a kit that is sold as supposedly "easy to install" it would have some markings or at least some detailed instructions in the kit.

Unfortunately, I have not found in the instructions, the proper connection to make sure I'm not inflating the right rear when I push the button to inflate the left front. Maybe it's hidden in the text somewhere, but I can't seem to find it. I have sent a request to Firestone Technical Support, so we'll see what I get back. Otherwise, I guess I'll be doing the trial/error thing and marking it as I find the proper sequence.

Maybe these drawings will help: Firestone instructions

I really appreciate your time in finding this, but that's the instructions included with the kit. Unfortunately, they do not indicate which plug controls which valve block. It's easy enough to figure out which sensor will control which output to the airbag connected, but on the wireless controller, the indicator is LF/RF and LR/RR. I need to know which plug from the ECU controls which valve block. Both blocks are the same...they are just controlled by different wires.
  • It looks like violet and tan wires controls the rear block and orange and blue wires for the front block.
That is why they label two different wheels on the block for each wire. For instance if you are wiring the rear block for the RR air bag it would be controlled by the violet wire. If that same block was used for the front air bags then it would be the blue wire for the RF.

Guess I got a 50/50 chance, huh? I'll snap some photos and try to post them so you can get a visual. I get to determine which block controls front or rear by determining which block I run the air lines from to front or rear. What I don't know, is which plug from the ECU is programmed to control front or rear. I could easily make the front valve block in the diagram control the rear air bags by simply running the air lines to the rear air bags, but intuitively, I want the wireless controller to inflate the left front air bag when I push the button associated with the left front air bag. The wiring instructions don't say which is which.

    Here you go YouTube

Thanks! The general setup in the video is the same as what I have, but my system doesn't have a tank and has 2 separate valve blocks that have two outputs and two pressure sensors each. The ECU has two main plugs that I ASSUME control each valve block for front and rear.

EDIT...NEVERMIND... TOTAL IDIOT MOMENT!!! I just saw the writing on each block...thanks for point it out for me !!! LOL! Now, I'm going to go back to basic remedial reading and observation school before I even attempt to do another project.... Ughhhh... DOH!!!!! Just keep walking...nothing to see here.........:S
