Well gang,
Mine is now ready to be mounted in the coach. I had to spend quite a bit of time on the heater section because it was so encrusted with corrosion/dirt/rust etc. And, the two screws I broke off, trying to remove the old purge shield were a real pain to drill out and re-tap. So, all in all, like stated, there was no way to even think about doing the service while on the rig.
And, in reality, it only took me about 40 minutes to get break the air lines loose, remove the electrical, and all four mounting bolts so, it was no big deal for me to take down and do all the work on the work bench.
To AikenRacer,
To me Sir, there's some governing factors that effect the frequency of service. Now, I'm not sure what Haldex uses as criteria for frequency of service other than a time frame. But my thoughts are, if one operates in cold, wet weather or, many wet roads, or, you drive/camp/travel in more humid weather than say, someone like us who drives/operates/camps/ in much less humid environments.
Now, this all just theory of course but, if you operate a lot more in wet roads or, wet weather or, more humid conditions like the south, south east, much of the Midwest, that air dryer has to work quite a bit harder to provide good, clean, dry air for the air system on the coach, than it would in say, So Cal or, AZ, Utah etc.
If any of you have home air compressors in your garages, you have to drain them every once in a while of all the moisture that is developed when air is compressed. And, the more humid the weather, the more moisture is developed and, the more frequent you need to drain that compressor tank.
Again, this is all theory on the air dryers being compared to home air compressors and, the areas or, regions the coaches are operated in. Also as stated, mine has not been serviced at all, for almost 11 years and 60K miles. So, I figured the interior was going to be bad looking. It was bad, but not as bad as I expected.
Now, I got my service kit for about $65 off ebay and, I've seen them for well over double that. But, my thoughts on that are, if you do it yourself, then you can save, easily around $125.00 (minimum of 1 hour of shop rate labor) and, you get the satisfaction of knowing it's done and done right.
