Air horns don't work. update: DUH!

2002 Itasca Horizon DP.

When I hit the horn bar on the steering wheel all I get is the electric horn.

Air horn ON/OFF switch on dash is ON.

Electric horn works fine.

Only fuse I can see marked horn checks fine.

Yes there was air--I was driving down the road when I first realised they weren't working.

Any ideas? :h

We're in an RV Park in Mexico for the winter.
  • Locate the air solenoid for the air horns. See if it is getting power when someone hits the horn (with ignition on I suspect). You should hear a "click" as the solenoid opens.
  • On my '04 Vectra (sister to your Horizon) the air horn relay is in the front gen compartment behind the aux air hookup panel where the air gauge is located. Not sure if yours is there but that's where I'd look first.

Others who have had issues say to give it a couple raps with a hammer and/or squirt a touch of oil in it and let it soak. They are robust but can sometimes seize up due to moisture etc. You can also jump it with a 12v cable to see if it really is the relay or the switch/wiring etc.

On my '04 the manufacturer is Hadley, their web site had a maintenance PDF for the relay.
  • I would highly recommend doing what wolfe10 suggests first. If no 12v to the solenoid, then I would check for an open in the circuit both between the power source and the air horn switch as well as an open in the circuit between the air horn switch and the air solenoid valve.

If you have 12v at the solenoid, then most likely the valve is stuck. I've had to disassemble the valve on our coach a couple of times and clean it then apply a bit of silicone spray before reasssembly, always seemed to work for me.

    Good luck and safe travels...
  • Thanks for the replies. I'll tackle it tomorrow--the RV Park owner is away fishing for the day and left me in charge! :B
  • If the electric horn sounds then there is something wrong in the on/off circuit as the electric horn does not sound when the air horn does. It should be one or the other but not both.
  • Once we had a dirt dobber nest in our air horns... Just throwing this in the mix. :)
  • So the campground owner is away and your trying to get air horns working? Smooth move. :) :) :)

Don't know about Winnebago, but when I turn on my Air Horns, my electric horns still work. I checked on that when I bought the coach, and they told me that is correct. (I would prefer to have either/or for the horns and is on my "to-do" list to attempt re-configure the horn circuit.)
  • Forgot to post the solution earlier.

Found the fault. Had a leaking air valve replaced last fall on the way south. The tech hadn't replaced the 12V connections to the solenoid. :S
