Another HWH Leveling System Problem

I have the HWH 625 automatic leveling system on my motorhome.
The touch pad does not respond or light up to any commands, auto or manual. The slides work fine and the little light comes on when I operate the slides. Brake is set and transmission in park. I have tried ignition switch in start, acc, and off. The system worked fine in the past, but became intermittent, and now nothing at all.

Yes, I have downloaded the service manual and gone through the troubleshooting matrix. There is not anything in it that covers my specific condition. All the required lights in the control box come on as required.

Yes, I know that I can call HWH and wait 2 to 3 weeks for a return call and advice.

I would like to know if anyone on this forum has had the same problem and/or some suggestions to test the system or possible fixes.

Thank you.
  • Thanks to everyone. Lots of good ideas so far. Keep them coming.

In answer to one question, my rig is a DP, 400 Cummins ISL, on a Spartan chassis.

I am familiar with New Horizon RV in San Mateo. I have furnished a good part of their revenue stream over the past few years. Good guys, but I try to do some things myself if possible. Will get them working if something is not found.

I have checked the voltage at the touch pad. It is less than one volt, which says maybe the control box is not doing its job or a connection is bad.
One reason I didn't think it was a ground problem is that both the control box and touch pad have the same ground according to the schematic. All the required lights in the control box are lit according to the troubleshooting matrix. Comments on this?

    sealevel ram,
Well Sir, you don't say what kind of rig, diesel, gas, what? It's not overly important here but, it may help. Now, as Dennis has suggested, since grounding is usually at the top of the list when it comes to electrical problems with the automotive world, I'd start there. And, as I understand it, there is no ground to your system unless the parking brake, (mechanical if gas, air/spring if diesel) is set. It is then, that a ground is supplied. At least that's the way I understand it to work.

So, if the switching in the parking brake system i.e. "interlock" is what allows the HWH system to work, then there is a good place to start. I'm no tech, but, thought I'd throw this at ya, especially since we have the same exact system. Good luck and please post if you've found the cause.

  • On my NEWMAR MH,the leveling works ONLY in the ACC mode. Set the key to ACC,then
take a good look at the HWH control box, there are LED lights inside, check and write down which ones are ON. the box has a plexi glass cover, located in the left front under the hood.Check all the connectors there and the connector to
the touchpad. Then call HWH with your findings, model # or email them.
I had a very good experience with them a few years ago on a 325 system and fixed
the board myself. If you have a multi-meter,check for 12VDC and good grounds.
  • This time of year there shouldn't be a wait at HWH since this is not their peak season. Worth a shot to call them. They have excellent customer service. We took our RV to the factory in Moscow IA for service. They were excellent! There are HWH service centers listed on their website. New Horizon RV in San Mateo is listed there.

This statement indicates a failing control board or a failing ground. Since the ground is the easiest and cheapest fix, I'd start with that. Locate the ground wire and jumper the system with a known good ground. If it lights up as it should, replace the ground. If not, then you'll have to wait on HWH to get back to you. Otherwise you might just be throwing $$ away.....Dennis
  • Sounds like control electronics, either the touch pad or control board going bad. The intermittent failure suggests to me the touch pad itself.
