Anti-Sway bar for Freightliner XC-chassis

I have a 2006 tiffin 35DH Phaeton diesel-pusher class a motorhome; and I'm looking at trying to modify my coach in order to improve handling characteristics. Since I purchased the coach in July 2015, I've experienced situations where the coach is affected by side winds/on-coming large rigs/side to side rolling when on uneven surfaces. So far my research of anti-sway bar kits for the coach's Freightliner XC-chassis with 4 air bags has resulted with negative results.
Has anyone with a similar coach configuration found any third parties who supply/make an anti-sway bar kit for both the front end and rear axle area? If I've left out any technical data which could help with your response, please let me know. Thanks; and apologies ahead of time; new member, first post. But have monitored this great forum for the last 4 years in preparation of us becoming full time Rvers.

  • Had a Winnebago Journey 36' on XC chassis for 8 years. For sure check all the basic stuff like correct ride height, tire pressure, condition of shocks.

I installed a Safe T Steer stabilizer on the front and Super Steer Motion Control Units on each of the four air bags. The MCU's made a remarkable difference in handling.... reduced Walmart Wobble, less leaning in corners, just a much more stable ride. I believe there are other companies making similar devices but the Supersteer units were what was available at that time.

As noted if your end link bushings and your front sway bar bushings are rubber, they may be hard. Replacing them with the urethane bushings will also help.
  • Want to thank you all for your quick replies/suggestions; have arranged an appointment for scheduled servicing with Empire Truck Sales (Freightliner dealer) in Pensacola, Fl. Will discuss with them about checking all the points you all have raised. Many thanks for your feedback.
  • Actually, the first thing to check is the SWAY BAR END LINK BUSHINGS.

If you can see any clearance between bushings and bar/chassis rail, your sway bar is just along for the ride and not doing anything for you.

Polyurethane bushings are available and a big improvement over the rubber ones.
  • I have the Blue Ox TruCenter steering stabilizer. I was able to install it myself and it works well when I am driving in a strong crosswind. However, I did not have an issue with side rolling. I use it to set the center of the steering when driving in a strong crosswind so I am not holding the steering wheel to the side. I also purchased it to help me if I ever blow a front tire.

I'd go with a larger diameter one on the rear before trying to put one on the front. Larger, stiffer shocks would help on uneaven roads, but not as much for cross winds.
  • There are several things that you can do to improve handling, but a sway bar is not one of them.

    1. Verify ride height is correct.

    2. Verify correct tire pressure.

    3. Verify that the bellcrank is not binding or has excessive wear.

    4. Adjust the steering box for proper tightness.

    5. Add restrictors in the lines to the air bags to reduce the Walmart roll.

    6. Install a steering stabilizer like the SafeTPlus.

I'm guessing that your 35 ft. coach has a 208 inch wheelbase and there is only so much that you can do, but all of the above should help.
