Any ideas on cleaning the roof??

I climbed up on the roof (fiberglass) to wash the road grime off. That comes off OK with a combination of some soap, water, and a long handled scrub brush. Unfortunately, there are hundreds/thousands of little black spots (insect dung, I suppose) that won't come off without vigorous scrubbing with a small scrub brush while on my knees.

Tomorrow, I plan on trying my high pressure washer or buying a power floor scrubber-------------unless someone has a better idea.

Once clean, can anyone recommend something to coat the roof with (liquid wax or ?) to make it easier to clean in the future.
  • 427435,
(What great motor) Anyway, fiberglass roofs are a good roof but, as normal, because they're horizontal, the acquire everything and hold onto it for dear life. On ours, pressure washing was out due to, I knew it would not do any good. Ours too had the zillion little black spots. Along with those, it had globuals of Silicone all over due to lack of care by individuals installing the King Dome and other appliances. I had to literally scrape, with a metal, 1 1/2" stiff bladed paint scraper to get all that silicone off.

Then, out came the Dewalt buffer. The kind used by painters to rub out paint jobs, not the little weasel types that vibrate and do nothing. I used a cutting/polishing compound and then, a wax coat using Kit wax. Yep, it was a ton of work and, when done, as you see in the pics, it dam near looks as good on the roof as the full body paint looks like on the side of the coach. Lots of time, lots of rest periods, (some naps, well, LOTS of naps) but, in about 2 days of on and off work, it looks like it does. You'll have to be the judge if you'll want to go through the work process.

I don't ever plan on putting any floor polish up there. Just not my thing.

Some use Mop and Glo, and others use Zep Wet Look floor polish. Or like Smlranger recommended, Aerospace 303 is a excellent product. There are some around here that only use Aerospace 303 and no wax at all, and their coaches look brand new! And to clean it first, a scrub brush with a long handle and Bar Keepers Friend or Bon Ami. And no way would I recommend the high pressure washer or buying a power floor scrubber!!! Your asking for trouble using those.

It is a one-piece fiberglass roof. I wouldn't be aiming the wash at any of the cut-outs in the roof----------nor what the power scrubber get at them.

  • I believe that you will find that the black spots are mold. Use a product like X14 spray or make your own with a diluted solution of household bleach in a spray bottle of water. Spray on, let sit for a couple of minutes, wipe clean with an old towel. Be careful and wear old clothes as the bleach will stain them if you splash any on your clothes. Do a small section at a time. Works for me.

  • I'm not a great fan of using pressure washers on the motorhome, especially the roof.

The coach we just got also had some sort of sticky little round deposits on the fiberglass roof. I could not really scrub them off. So, I had one of those metal floor scrapers on a long handle (like you would use to scrape chewing gum off a floor). I used Turtle Wax Zip Wash. I wet the roof, used the scraper to loosen the deposits, then scrubbed the area with a long handled stiff brush. It cleaned up really well.

I use 303 Protectant on the roof after washing it.
  • McGures Marine/RV products are good. collinite is even better.
