It all depends on the motorhome and the 5er. A 40 foot 5er with three slides will have more room than a 40 foot Class A with 2 slides. On Storage I've seen 5ers with lots more storage than I have. But I haven't seen 5ers with more storage than a Bus conversion that has all the huge bays underneath. So yes you can get a Class A with more space and more storage, but if you compare the dollars you'll likely be paying a lot more for that space and storage.
Agree with all you said. I guess when I think of class A there are obviously more than DP's . I just wonder what they compared them too.
I think you have to compare Apples to Apples. I have a 35 foot DP with three slides on a Freightliner Chasis. I have storage bays underneath, but they aren't huge and they are a little hard to get in to. If I compared my DP with a similar quality 35 foot 5er with three slides, it's going to have more interior space because it doesn't have a cockpit and it doesn't have all the space taken up by the engine compartment. And that 35 foot 5er is going to have one of those huge compartments up front that is real easy to get into that I would love to have in my motorhome. I don't have any exterior storage that I can get into without getting down on my knees. I'd love to have something up at a chest high level that I could put all my commonly used stuff in.
One thing I know for sure, is my next motorhome is going to come with big basement compartments that have those big drawers that you can pulled out to get to all your junk.
Agreed ... apples to apples. 40' to 40' - slides to slides. But there are different types of class A's .... Front engine ( you definitely lose interior space from the engine) a DP, Not so much loss of "usable" space. We sit up front in the driver and passenger chairs quite a bit ( they are turned of course). So for ours that is desired usable space. Kinda like a sun porch for us.
On fivers I think they are measured to the end of the fiver hitch back ( I could be wrong). So the hitch is definitely nothing usable for living quarters. On DP's there are different bay configurations with different frame manufactures. Some have more room than others. But for the most part much more than a fiver.
I just haven't seen for apples to apples - slides being equal that any fiver has that much more livable area then all MH's or any for that matter.
Now pricing his a whole other story. You can get a new loaded dually diesel truck pulling a fiver worth over $100,000. Truck from most big three loaded out can easily be over $70,000. This was our situation. We paid slightly more for the new MH compared with a truck and fiver combo. It was within $15,000 dollars. Of course it's not a Prevost, but not the bottom on the pack either.
