Every single one is a favorite with us! We volunteered at Lost Dutchman and Kartchner in the cave. :) Arizona has awesome parks.

In general, coyotes are no more protected than any other animal. There is a hunting season for coyotes, like most other varmints and game animals. Grey mexican wolves are specifically protected though.

Also, if you were in a populated area, you cannot shoot a firearm within a quarter mile of any occupied building, dwelling, or campsite. As well, most incorporated cities and designated towns don't allow shooting firearms within the city or town limits, unless at a designated shooting range. The exception is in a life or death personal protection situation (bear or mountain lion attack, other human attacking, etc).

If you mean Roosevelt Lake in Arizona - that's not a national park. It's national forest.

OP: No, you can't boondock at state parks although some have dry camping but there's a charge per night.

You can't explore Arizona (or Texas) by staying in one spot. You need to move around. Find a spot in these areas to see good winter areas: Yuma, Quartzsite, along the Colorado River up to Havasu City, Wickenburg, the greater Phoenix area, down to Tucson and as far east as Benson.

AZ state parks are actually pretty pricey but, as others have reported, there are plenty of federal areas where one can boondock. The BLM land is the least hassle.

Sly, there is a fee to stay at AZ. State Parks. I've stayed at two AZ. State Parks, Cattail Cove S.P. South of Lake Havasu City, AZ. and River Island S.P. on the Parker Strip. Both are very nice and you can stay for 2 weeks. The AZ. BLM (Bureau of Land Management) has several free campsites I only know of two! One is North of Lake Havasu City, AZ. (up on top of the hill on the Eastside of HWY. #395) where all the Burro's hang out. You can get your free permit at the BLM Office in LHC. and the other free campsite is Dome Rock in Quartzsite, AZ. Dome Rock is on the road that goes past the garbage dump on the left side. La Poza, a BLM pay site is 1 my South of Quartzsite on Hwy #395, the BLM charged me $40.00 for 2 weeks or $200.00 for the winter season. Good Luck! And Sly, if you travel with pets in AZ. be aware of the coyotes they are very aggressive have been known to snatch small dogs while walking on leash's. And they are a protected species by law in AZ. you don't want to harm or harass them. You can get free Dome Rock permits at La Poza, free permits are for 30 days only then you have to move to the next free site.

Basically by pulling out into the desert and setting up camp. It is slightly more difficult than I state BUT NOT MUCH must be over a thousand acres of boondock on BLM land.

Note that although you will be boondocking the odds of being alone are slim

I'm pretty sure there are BLM lands east of Parker, AZ where you can boondock for free or very low cost.
