Bakersfield ca. to Phoenix

As Janss suggested, we used 58 to Barstow, then 40 to AZ-95. That took us through Lake Havasu City to Quartzsite and I-10. It's only a few miles longer than going through LA, but not near as stressful.

I like MarkTwain's idea, though I've never driven that route.

Another way is 58, I-40, then 95 in CA or 95 in AZ(along Colorado River), making your way down to I-10.

Hwy 18 to Apple Valley

58 to 395 to 10 after 10 pm. Trucks seem to fill every off ramp after 10 pm on 58. Clear sailing.

There are plenty of other routes but they will likely take longer than biting the bullet. Check with a traffic flow map first - you don't have to go blindly into that.
