Battery wiring problem. Everything stopped

When getting new house batteries installed, it is obvious I mis wired something. When I fired the engine up, it sounded as if the coach system was cycling and checking, then the panel light went off. Five seconds later the engine shut down. Slight smell of electrical fire outside. Does any have a coach battery wiring diagram for a 2003 Discovery? Do I have other serious problems?

    Should be wired like this....

And the engine batts are still hot.

    Disconnect them....negative cable FIRST

As for the fuses.......DO you have a 'converter' )Reverse polarity fuses are located on the converter------usually 30A or larger)???

Are you connected t AC shore power? If so unplug until you find/resolve DC issue with batteries.

You need to unhook the hot batteries before something bad happens . The figure out your wiring issue. If it worked before the battery swap then obviously something is wrong .

First thing I would do would be to find the word 'NEG' or the symbol '-' on the battery case and make sure this is the battery terminal that goes to frame ground.

Did you add 12VDC batteries or maybe two 6VDC Batteries in series.

This is a pictorial on how the two type should be hooked up..

Let us know what type of batteries you installed 12VDC or 6VDC...

Once you get the battery terminals wired correctly then you can go looking for the REVERSE POLARITY fuess and an in-line fuse or circuit breaker close to the battery positive terminal. These are here to blow in case the battery terminals have been wired in reverse order... You need to get the batteries wired correctly otherwise as soon as you replace the blown fuses they will just blow again...

Let us know what you found out...

  • Oh, and after disconnecting house batts and seizing if engine would fire, which it didn't, the engine batts got hoy
  • Physically trace house battery negative cable to frame.....

IF you wired batteries based on 'colors' or 'memory' you could have hooked up cables backwards.
If backwards..hopefully 'reverse polarity' fuses blew and that is all that is wrong.
But that depends on IF you have converter, inverter and/or both

Sounds like you shorted the circuit. Good news is you created a welder, bad news is you may have really messed some things up. Hopefully fuses went or a wire melted before any real damage was done.
