best residential frig for a MH

I,M sick of our gas frig , whats the best brand 120v frig for rv,s I,ve heard of some on here but didn,t right them down. don,t understand how you can leave home and the box is 28deg exhaust fans on. get to your camp and its in the upper 40,s. sitting level 48hrs later and the freezers froze and box is 48deg.
  • Sounds like you may have the temp control set to low. Also the hotter it is outside, set the temp control warmer not colder, the unit will cycle more often but will stay cold. Setting the temp colder will usually freeze the unit up and it will get warm in the fridge until it thaws out and the freezing cycle starts all over again. Also make sure the upper vent is open and the back of the fridge is free of all debris.
  • Samsung is popular and most RV manuf. seem to use Whirlpool Counter top depth and around 18 cu.ft. What ever will fit in the space available.

Samsung because you can use a MSW inverter as it uses DC compressors. Not sure of the new model # as the old one 197.

It requires 6" more height than a NoCold 1200.
  • We like the Samsung 18cf that came with our new RV. Don't know the model no. offhand.
  • Most Class C have the smaller size frig.
    Here is one I researched.
Whrilpool 10.7 cu. ft. Top Freezer Refrigerator
Your current problem may be a simple as gas orifice needing to be cleaned. When unit is running on gas you should hear the burner. Not as loud as a water heater.
If not remove orifice and soak in alcohol. Then blow out with air. Reinstall and should have better operation of frig.
Mobile tech told me that spiders like LP and lay eggs in the orifice. Blocking it from full flow.
  • There are also 12 VDC compressor fridges from Nova Kool, Dometic, Norcold, Isotherm, Vitrifrigo, etc. No inverter losses.
  • What fits, and still ventilates the condenser coils, preferably without forced air. Thus it might not be residential per se, rather a compressor-evaporator cycle refrigerator designed for mobile or marine use.

Really small compressor fridges, sold for dorm, motel, minibar use, often have about 1/2 the interior volume compared to similar package size absorption units. That's because the refrigeration unit has a minimum package size. Once you get up to 12-16 cu ft (if you have the space) the situation gets better, because the size of the compressor refrigeration unit doesn't grow much as capacity increases.

Most RV manufacturers are putting in Whirlpool or Samsung residential units at 16-18 cu ft, not a typical size for a C motorhome or small travel trailer. If you are trying to replace a 6-12 cu ft RV unit, expect a substantial reduction in interior volume, and you'll be shopping bar or dorm refrigerators, not residential models.
  • Since you posted this in the Class C Motorhome section, I assume you will put the refrigerator in a Class C.

Most, if not all, of the people changing out their Norcold for a "residential" seem to have Class A Motorhomes. It could be a challenge to create the space necessary in a C. Plus the electrical is usually not setup up for a frig, you may need more batteries than you have space for.
  • Smart to go with residential. If it is the right size for a full size I'd just go with a plain top over bottom used off Craigslist. It's just a coach fridge... You may be able to get a good one for $100 to $150.
