- garcam123ExplorerI'm trending toward the view route and considering mid-day Sunday for the approach and crossing......
Thanks for your interesting replies! - IAMICHABODExplorer IIIJust an update from the previous post.
Just went the way I said before,85,I-280,Exit 19th street, stay left plenty of signage, and follow signs. Stay in middle lane all the way to the Golden Gate.Piece of Cake!!
I went into the View area at the North end of bridge. It was crowded but plenty of room. There is RV and bus parking on the north side of view area.
Enjoy. - napadanExplorerI agree with Pnichols that it's best to avoid SF entirely. At San Jose, take 880 north, past Berkeley to the San Rafael Bridge. In San Rafael, head north on 101. This route may still be slow, but it's far less crowded. Stay as far as you can from SF. It is a great place to visit (and live!), but not in a motorhome.
- pnicholsExplorer IIGary,
Why don't you consider going around San Francisco instead of through it.
We live in the Bay Area and have friends who live North of San Francisco in a town off of 101. We go up 880 and then head Northwest over to 101 after San Francisco. We have a 24 foot Class C and HAVE gone through San Francisco, but try not to do it anymore anytime of day. - garcam123ExplorerThanks to the responders. I'm setting up my gps now.
Regards,
Gary - hotbyteExplorerI'd like to hear the the East to West route...especially the west of the city part :) :) :)

In about a week I'm going the same way with a 28'Class C Chevy Too.
This is how I'm going to do it.
Get off 101 just before San Jose and on to 85 and take that to I-280. Stay on I-280 to the exit for route 1, 19th ave.Try to stay in the center lane and follow the signs thru SF Park to the bridge.
There no tolls or restrictions that way I have been told not to go thru in the morning rush hours so I plan to be there mid day.
If you can Google map it you can see the whole thing.
I also plan to stop at the north end view area. I did a Google earth on it and you can do a virtual drive thru the whole thing.
Good luck
I've taken that route several times in a 24' Class C with a toad. It's not bad at all. I've taken detours off 19th Ave into the neighborhoods to pick up passengers, also. The route IAMICHABOD lists is a nice low speed trek and, for me, preferable to high-speed freeways.
Eric - BordercollieExplorerWe always carefully plan our way bypassing SF and going through Oakland then reconnecting with 101. The interstate highway signs are confusing and sometimes you won't see a sign for a long time and think you are off track. A GPS will help reassure you. Best to avoid rush hour traffic if possible.
We have enjoyed stays at the Petaluma KOA north of SF. It's a converted farm/ranch with animals to pet and a pool and stuff for kids. - D_E_BishopExplorerI think your route is just as good as any. SF is an interestin place to visit and driving 101 through town is not really bad just a tad slow.
