I would not mind it if they were looking for someone doing something wrong, but there is more to it. There are Companies out there that pay for the equipment and install it at no charge to Cities, Counties, and States, for not only roadside cameras, but equipping law enforcement vehicles, and other Government vehicles with the cameras.
The Companies then get the license plate number, and location the plate was recorded at as vehicles pass by, or the vehicle with a camera passes them parked. Law Enforcement gets to read the plates and see if they are stolen, or wanted in connection with a crime.
Why do the companies do this for free? The Companies generally have a contract with your State DMV for the information on the plate, your information, the DMV sells it to them. The Company with the data then sells what they collect to marketing folks, or anyone else who is willing to pay.
That is why I do not like them, and I should be able to opt out, just like I do anything else.
