we in rural Oregon still have attendants pump our gas. we are allowed to pump our own gas only at card toll island pumps. we had a rural gas guy lobby the oregon legislature to not allow people to pump their own gas back about 25 years ago, he won. he saved many jobs by doing so. most stations have young high school kids pumping gas for them. it helps the kids buy their own school clothes etc.
Not really true as gasoline in NJ is quite a bit cheaper per gallon than the surrounding states of NY,Pa,and Ct...which all have self pumping in place...Chuck
Seems like something would have to give. Businesses aren't in the business of losing money. If they don't include the cost of doing business in their gas prices, then they are either losing money, agreeing to make less profit, or the price of gas would be cheaper if they went self serve.
Something is not quite right, or we're missing some key info. On average, gas stations make pennies on the gallon, as self serve. So, to have to pay (presumably) minimum wage at a full service station, that would eat into those profits tremendously.

It's really pretty easy to see where the differences are between NJ and the surrounding states that allow NJ station owners to profit at similar pricing levels.
