Camping in San Diego

My MIL lived in La Jolla, so we made many trips from Durango to San Diego with our motorhome. We have stayed in three places of which I would only enthusiastically recommend one. The Chula Vista Marina and RV Resort, which is a bit south of town on I-5, but easy to get in and out of from the interstate. We also stayed many times at Campland on the Bay (Mission Bay) in Pacific Beach. It was very handy for our needs and comfort, but we did not love the place. Lots of little ants, among other things. We stayed in the Mission Bay RV Resort once, but it was not a friendly place and had few amenities. (Drove over their speed bump at about 1 MPH and a cupboard spewed a lot of, it turns out, highly breakable Melamine onto the floor!) If you don't need the proximity to SD, then look at the places in Oceanside, which would be more fun.

Like Polly Sue only one I would suggest is Chula Vista Marina & RV Resort.

With a car it provides access to the entire San Diego area. Very clean, well cared for grounds, restrooms, showers and pool area. Great staff and security at night.

They have been spraying for ants so it's not as bad as in the past.

We stay in San Diego to visit our son. Mission Bay RV Park is centrally located and easy to get in & out. They take Passport America on I think, Mon to Wed. If you like to be outdoors in your chairs then the one in Chula Vista is better.

Can't offer advice on camping in SD, but I can tell you that it's a great place to visit. Lots and lots to see and do. Great restaurants. People there have a high level of civic pride, in the 5 days we spent there we were thanked 3 times for visiting by total strangers.

And make sure to visit La Jolla. We had no plans to go there and several residents on the same flight we were on urged us to to go there. We did and it was well worth it!

Check out Santee Lakes. I have been to all the others listed above and they are nice but we like Santee Lakes better. No bad choices around San Diego.

As some have mentioned the Chula Vista Resort is nice,a bit crowded and very pricy but right in the harbour with a restaurant with in walking distance. It south of the City but getting there is not a problem.

The KOA San Diego is a nice place with that open feeling, friendly staff and very clean. It is also south of the city but closer, it is my favorite.

Campland on the bay is north of the city and if you have kids there is a lot of things to do for them,it can get rowdy at times with a lot of partying.

We stayed at Santee Lakes in a 45' motorhome pulling a jeep. We stayed there almost 2 weeks. We drove the car to Santee Town Center an took the trolly (train) into town several times. It was relatively easy to use. Santee Lakes is a real nice place until it rains (gets a little muddy).

We have camped @ Campland on Mission Bay w/ water front views for 2 months each of the last 8 yrs. Centrally located. Didn't like location in Chula Vista!

Chula Vista RV park is lovely. Campland on the Bay, a family favorite for years is fantastic for the family, but with hundreds of camping kids, it may no be your best choice if you like quiet. We love it, on our last camping trip a full-time couple next to use hated the park as they could not find "quiet private space." San Diego KOA is also a nice park. There is another nice park, directly across for Campland on the Bay which is less of a "family with children" park. Can't remember the name.

Chula Vista is great we just stayed there for a week in a super saver site
