- hersheyExplorerIf you don't feel comfortable with doing it, don't.
I have from a straight start. I release the locks on the telescoping Blue Ox and back up in a straight line. One the rear of the car starts to drift to one side or the other, you've gotten all the travel your going to get. - JagtechExplorerI guess I am trying to understand how a person can jump into the toad and "steer" it when you are backing up the MH. How do you anticipate which way the hitch is going to swing, and by how much? Otherwise, the front wheels are just going to drag in the direction that the hitch swings. Am I wrong?

It's the rare time that I ever need to back up....especially if I'm towing, I just have to think about it and not put myself in the situation. The one time I did need to back up, I had turned into a campground that had the exit blocked and not enough room to turn around and exit back through the entrance. I wondered how many others turned into there and got into the same situation as me. - KidooExplorerOn my next trip this winter I will try to think like if I had a toad and see if it does not botter me too much not to be able to back up.

Not the first time this subject has come up. I do my best not to get in to a situation where I have to back up but I have done it a few times. The longest was about 100 feet straight back. I just went very slow and watched the toad in my camera.
My Demco tow bar says in the instructions to be careful when backing so it is obvious that their tow bar is designed for backing. I can't speak for any other brand.
I'm thinking that I'd tear something up in the Jeep, before bending our READYBRUTE bars. - mowermechExplorerOn Page 1 (SAFE TOWING PRACTICES) of the Roadmaster Stowmaster tow bar Owners Manual:
CAUTION
Do not back up the motorhome with the towed vehicle attached.
No ifs, ands, buts or maybes, they just say do not do it! - rgatijnet1Explorer IIINot the first time this subject has come up. If you have to put the rv in reverse versus neutral just keep a tiny bit of tension using the rv brake.
When backing a boat down a ramp I put the vehicle in neutral and let the boat pull me back. Goes straight as an arrow if I leave the steering wheel alone.
And as a side note., My business partner backed his up a few feet to reach the fuel pumps at a station., Down the road he said the toad tried to pass him. He saw it in the rear view mirrors. Good thing for safety chains. - YC_1NomadTry this in a pinch if there are two of you. Start the toad up and pull the rv backwards.
