Charging cabin batteries

Hello again fellow RVers!

I described this problem many months ago and received many replies but most responses (wrongly) concluded that it was a Honda 2000i problem. Unfortunately, the problem was never resolved and still dogs me.
Here's the issue....

* Everything works perfectly on shore power.
* Everything works perfectly on generator(s) in both Econo and Full throttle AT ANY LOADwithin factory spec.
* Everything works perfectly on batteries.

SO WHAT'S MY PROBLEM????

When running only on batteries and discharged about 25% or 30%, I’ll start one of the 2000i to top up the batteries for the night and AFTER 15 to 30 seconds, the generator starts to surge. Disconnecting the batteries returns generator to normal operation but reconnecting the batteries causes a repeat of the problem. I can do this numerous times without being able to recharge the batteries depending on degree to which batteries were discharged. If not badly discharged, the 2000i may begin normal operation after 10 or 20 tries of disconnecting/connecting batteries. When more deeply discharged, the generator will not respond to disconnecting/connecting and I retire for the night on less than full charge HOWEVER, I recently discovered that returning to the problem after a night's rest and with the system on battery power overnight (and even more discharged), the generator(s) was able to run without a problem and recharged the batteries without a hint of the surge problem experienced the night before.

Incidentally, when topping up batteries when only slightly discharged, no problem occurs and everything runs smoothly with batteries pretty much topped up in 10 or 15 minutes.

If you just read the above closely, you will realize that THIS IS A CHARGING PROBLEM AND NOT A GENERATOR CARB ISSUE, but darned if I can figure out what's going on.

For the record, my batteries are new and properly connected. My generators are both 2000i and each performs perfectly except when the above problem occurs. I've tested each generator separately in both Econo and Full mode when problem is occurring and I've run them both in parallel while the problem is happening (again in both Econo and Full), and problem persisted. The converter is a PD9100.

I'm 2000 miles from home at the moment and was foolish to put off dealing with this recurring problem before setting off on most recent adventure.
