I put 1 cup of clorox bleach in diesel tank (90gal) by mistake! The fuel hole is right next to the water fill,What should I do?
most posters here are guessing and or embelishing the seriousness of the situation.A cup of bleach will do nothing at all.The water sperater filter should catch that small amount of it were ever sucked off the bottom of the tank.I refuse to beleive that minute amount of bleach would cause any harm at all. - Canadian_RainbiExplorerCall Cummins or CAT, which ever engine you have, or Freightliner if it on a Freightliner chassis, or all three!
ANY your insurance company.
ASK THE EXPERTS! - Born_To_TravelExplorerDo NOT under any circumstances put water in that tank.. Find a pump sprayer, the kind that has a hand pump on top and a hose with a wand. Make shure it is clean and put DIESEL FUEL in it.. Adjust the nozzle to mist and put the wand up the drain plug hole in the bottom of the tank and wash out the whole inside of the tank letting the fuel to wash out into a pan.. This should take out any leftover chlorine in the tank..
- CT_WANDERERExplorerI would not put water into the tank. It sounds like you have emptied your tank good. If you have a internal fuel pump I would put some fuel in the tank, than with you fuel line off the filter head pump some fuel through the lines. Than put more fuel back into the tank, hook up the filter line and go for it. Get to a fuel pump and fill up your tank and keep an eye on your filters. JMHO Gary
- hrExplorerI pumped out the tank and then i pulled the plug on the tank sump and draind the rest,I went back to the water seperator and drained it and and took the line loose at the seperator to the tank and blew out the line back to the tank. What do you think. Should i fill the tank with water and drain and let air dry for a while.
- Born_To_TravelExplorerWe used to have school bus drivers pull up to the gasoline pumps at the bus garage and start putting gas in a diesel bus. After ten gallons or so they would realize the mistake and call for us.. We would have to tow it into the garage and drain the tank.. Of course gasoline is far better than bleach and a little left behind is not a problem. You will have to flush that tank after a total draining..
- popeye766ExplorerThis has really opened my eyes....I ,after 55 yrs turning wrenches never dreamed of this....I have searched and researched the internet and YES bleach will destroy your gas or diesel equipment if it is pumped thru it......including possible explosions, and engine seizure.......DRAIN it..no matter the cost and no quick fixes like water or such.....
You can bet I will be ordering me a locking gas cap from NAPA Monday.....to guard against someone doing this to me on a trip.
Iam sorry for your dilemma however its not the end of the world if you drain , and remove the tank for cleaning AND DONT TURN YOUR KEY ON to activate your pump. I would think a pump is in the tank..you will also have to replace it.
When I owned a union 76 service center a farmer once put gas in his radiator ,so you are not the only one.
