Coach layouts

Been wanting to upgrade to a DP for a while (budget prevents it), so doing lots of research.

One thing that I do look for in a coach is a table/dinette on the curbside. These layouts seem to be very hard to find, even on new coaches (look there just to dream) the kitchens tend to be on the curbside on most layouts. I want to be able to look out at my own site if I'm at my table, not my neighbor.

Just curious if there is a reason for the kitchens to be on the curbside?

At first I thought it was because most slides are on roadside and the logistics of sliding the kitchen could be an issue, but I do see many layouts with curbside slides with the kitchen in them.

Just wondering.

Thanks

Doug
  • Ours has the dining table and chairs on the curb side. Never gave it much thought one way or the other.
  • Of 51 DPs currently listed for sale at PPL motorhomes, 30 have the dining area streetside, 21 have it curbside. The kitchen is not necessarily on the opposite side from the dinette.

If, in the area where you are shopping, most you have seen have curbside kitchens, this likely reflects the preferences of the original buyers in that region, rather than manufacturers doing layouts only one way.

On the sales brochure from my clipper (back in 1975), Irv Perch stated that the kitchen is at the back by the door so that Mom can watch the kids in the campsite while she's cooking. I would guess that's why kitchens tend to be on the curbside - it was traditionally a "positive feature" for an RV and even with the advent of "retiree RVs", the manufacturers still do it by default.

Also, my dinette is on the driver's side, but I have large picture windows on both sides and the back and the windshield in front, so I'm not relegated to looking at the neighbors while I eat. Nowadays, the windows have shrunk a lot in size - so that layout where you used to be able to eat at the dinette and look out three or four directions now forces you to look out just the one. The manufacturers seems to have modified the views, but not the layout to work with the new views.
  • Our model Phaeton has the curb side dinette as we too only wanted this type of floor plan. Our previous coach had the dinette on the driver's side and really didn't care for it..... not to mention my sewer hose and connections were right there below me.

  • Country Coach has several too. I guess dining looking over someone's sewer hookups was mot palatable. I have heard this reason at shows/rallys...and yes their lips were moving so take for what it's worth. :) :)
  • Entegra Anthem makes a 44' Anthem with curbside dining table and chairs. My sister owns an older Foretravel with curbside dining table and chairs. Some companies will change the layout if you purchase new. Newmar makes several floorplans with dining on the curbside. Happy hunting!
