comment from newer Monaco and Fleetwood owners

Pre '08, general reputation for Fleetwood was less than optimal build quality, Monaco superior to most. Since they are now under the same roof, has Fleetwood gotten better or Monaco worse?

My question is based on a review from noted (especially on this forum)review firm. I'm looking for a not long diesel and virtually all the 36 ft diesels except Fleetwood show up with poor handling characteristics.
  • The quality will be what Fleetwood decides to make it.

So what is ASV doing with Monaco, other than keeping parts/support/service going (for which I am grateful)..

Was there a Diplomat at Hershey?...Yes they have a few gas models out there and the Ambassador I saw in Motorhome...BUT have no where near the variety/spectrum of choices for previous Monaco buyers like me...instead, someone brings out a Dynasty I've yet to see at 600K sticker price...while Entegra/Newmar and Tiffin take all the people who would have at least given Monaco a shot....oh yeah, they have Fleetwood and American Coach for those people...I want ASV to surprise us with Monaco...so far in my book, other than parts/service..it's a dud....Imagine dealers like DeMartini or Alliance Coach that put most of their eggs in the Monaco basket..you can bet they all have gone to plan B to keep their doors open.
  • Personally, I think Fleetwood makes a good coach. They've been doing it for a long time and they're still around. As with any company, they have dips in quality, but Fleetwood is very consistent.

I think people miss the point that Monaco is GONE. The only good thing about Fleetwood's parent company buying out what was left of Monaco is that they kept the parts store open. Even with that, the parts are made by other companies, many who have also gone out of business.

What made a Monaco a Monaco was their proprietary chassis (Roadmaster), same with Country Coach and Alpine Coach who had a proprietary chassis'.

Any Monaco you buy now is just a Fleetwood product with a Freightliner chassis. So.....quality has nothing to do with the Monaco name anymore. The quality will be what Fleetwood decides to make it.

I bought a 2013 Monaco gaser. One thing I like about Monaco is the warranty. You can take it anywhere for warranty service. Most RVs have to be taken back to original dealer for warranty service. Monaco does not discount what they pay for warranty service. Most likely because they still build quality into their MHs. I would buy another Monaco.

In the last fifteen years I have had timely, hassle free, no cost warranty work done by dealers in several states, none of whom were the "original dealer". This was on Jayco, Fleetwood and Winnebago products. Not quite sure where you got your idea? By your logic, a full-timer should just buy a new rig and throw all the warranty info. in the trash, since they are typically hundreds or thousands of miles away from the seller when an issue arises.

Actually is was a Jayco TT that I owned and purchased 2000 miles from my residence and warranty denied. I paid for the work to be done. Wires in the walls had twisted connections with no wire nuts or anything else to protect them. Repair dealer said it was the worst wiring he had ever seen in an RV. My 2012 Jayco TT almost burned to the ground on the 2nd trip. Third trip leaked badly. Jayco refused to step up to the plate. I just traded it. So far I am really happy with my Monaco MH. JMHO.
  • Milkman: Do not trust any of those reviews. A 36 ft FW uses the same Freightliner chassis that other manufactures use. They will all handle the same. Handling problems are solvable.

The newest Monaco is not using the 8 outboard air bags. The necessary sway bar is part of the air bag support. Have not driven one.
  • We took several factory tours before buying back in 2007 including the then Monaco factory in Wakarusa and Fleetwood in Decatur, IN. We just went back to the Decatur factory this summer and took the tour again. I thought there was a definite improvement in the factory in Decatur compared to 2007. I don't know if that will translate into a better coach or not.
  • Can't say one way or the other. Our Fleetwood is one year old. For the most part all is good. Of course there were the types of things one might find wrong with new units. But ours have been resolved and we are spending more time not finding issues. One big problem was with the engine so not really a Fleetwood problem. Ours had a steering issue but the tires were way over inflated. Since adjusting them it has resolved itself. I did add Koni shocks even after 2600 miles this year. It made a hugh difference to me in the ride and handling over factory shocks.

But I can say we had ours at the Fleetwood repair facility in Decatur IN. Early November last year. I didn't get it back until the end of December. While there I asked some workers how they felt about the new arraignment. Not many were very pleased about it. It did seem as the higher end coaches got a lot of attention. They even had a separate line when you call in for help. So maybe it's all about how much you spend on one?
