Consignment...Seller won't budge off of asking price.

Every day that goes by, I get closer and closer to taking the plunge...

I just put down a deposit (fully refundable) to hold a coach until the end of next week. Nada says 47k - 57k. The seller wants 45k, and won't budge AT ALL. Needs new tires, and new house batteries. I did a thorough inspection today, and found no major issues. I still plan to have an independent inspection, although I doubt anything they find will get the seller to budge.

The unit is a 2008 Fleetwood Fiesta LX 34N. Is this a fair price? I can't fathom that the price is non-negotiable, but then again she's asking below Nada. Aside from the tires/batteries, it's in really good shape...basically immaculate.

Cruch time... :/
  • A unit with new tires would be worth more than the NADA low end.

Some people hate to dicker. It appears she set a very reasonable price and that's it, take it or leave it. Because it does appear to be very reasonable, I wouldn't play the waiting game with her, it will be gone soon. Make a decision and get off the pot.

My opinion is as the economy is improving, more people are getting back into RVing and that's driving up the used prices. If that's happening, then the low NADA low pricing is probably too low for current selling prices.

I've negotiated pricing on a lot of things, but sometime I won't budge either on items I've sold. I had a piece of view property that I really liked, but it was in a town I knew I wouldn't moving back to anytime soon. A prospective buyer called, asked a lot of questions and then said he'd be mailing me an offer. I told him to make it for the full asking price or higher (the price was posted on the for sale sign). That threw him for a loop. I told him I really didn't want to sell it and therefore I wouldn't sell it for any less than the posted price. He knew the posted price was fair and it would sell soon. A check showed up for the full price the next week.

  • Would you be happier if the seller listed it for 50K and then you negotiated the price down to 45K? Smiling while thinking you just saved 5K!

When I want to sell something, I don't play games. I set a firm price, take it or leave it. I set what I think is a reasonable price, usually lower than the going market price to almost assure a sale to someone.
  • I just sold my park model trailer that I have. I set the price at the very low end because I want out. First person tried to negotiate down from the price I asked. I told him to get lost. Second person understood the price was a great price. Paying me cash for t he rig in a few days.

Point is if the price is right for you then buy it. If not walk away/

Honestly, this might sound woowoo, but I kind of go with my gut on these things. Assuming it checks out ok, does it FEEL like the right rig to you?

Your gut may put together a lot of data you don't pick up on consciously, and come up with an answer for you.

I haven't bought a consignment RV before, but I have bought a lot of used stuff, from S&B houses to old tshirts :).

Some people will dicker and some won't. Those that won't might not know it's a thing, and that they should set their asking price higher. Or they might have philosophical objections.

It doesn't matter: This is the price. Do you want the rig? Can you get something you like as much for less, or is this the one?
  • in my experience NADA is not always accurate for used RV's. You need to look at current actual listings & sales of that model. Most of the 2008 LX models are going for $50-60K depending on mileage & condition & options. So, I don't blame her for not going any lower. Some buyers actually set their bottom line price up front. is it a fair price? that's for you to decide.
  • It doesn't seem unfair, but that doesn't mean you should buy it. How much do you want it? How much does she want to sell? Is there other interest in the unit? You could walk and see if she calls you back, or just keep looking for that matter.
Frankly, the asking price that others want mean not very much to me. They may all be out of line.
  • I just did a quick search for the unit you're considering.
They were all listed well over 45K.
Did you research the price on other similar units?
Even buying new tires and house batteries you may be ahead of the game.
Obviously, you like the Fiesta you're looking at, or you would have walked by now.
Do some homework on the price.
And, let us know if you make the purchase. It sounds like you will. :)

Under low book and you find it unfathomable that they won't drop the price. Maybe they do not care if you buy it or not. Change your offer to $43 or $44 and you pay the consignment commission and I am sure you will own the coach with in moments.

Haha...maybe the unfathomable part is that they didn't start with their asking price higher. ;)

Considering that the cost of new tires brings it up above low book, I thought they could budge a little.

And perhaps it's my inexperience in buying RVs, but I've heard (read) a lot of people who say that were able to negotiate below nada by 10 percent or. That's what I was hoping for, but perhaps you're right, and I should take the deal.
