Convection Microwave vs. Gas Oven

We are about to pull the trigger on a larger RV. Up until now, every RV we have owned has had a gas oven as part of the cooktop assembly. The model we are considering does not offer a gas oven as a factory option but comes with a nice gas cooktop and a convection microwave. Installation of a gas oven as an "after market" item looks to be complicated and expensive (and will sacrifice a lot of storage).

I do not know if this is the right place to ask this question, but can you cook blueberry pie, or biscuits, or cinnamon rolls, or bread in a convection microwave oven? Is it as good as the food cooked in a regular propane oven in an RV? We have friends with convection microwaves in their RVs but I think for most of them cooking = heating up coffee or maybe a bag of gourmet microwave popcorn or a frozen TV dinner.

Help appreciated, and feel free to move this to another forum category if I posted it incorrectly.

Happy Camping and Happy Thanksgiving.

  • I have both a gas oven and convection microwave. I rarely use the gas oven in fact I use it mostly for storage.
  • There is always the option of a Toaster Oven that might set on the counter. We use ours quite a bit both at home and on the RV.
  • Another consideration of gas vs Convection... when you are off of the grid you will always need the genny running to power the Convection/microwave unless you have a large inverter {which will create a need for more genny runtime to recharge the house bank}. I avoid anything that is going to require more generator time as we are off the grid far more than on it, only 85 hours on our 6-year-old generator.

Sounds like a gas oven is not a cost-effective option for the OP. I prefer a standard gas model but do a lot of cooking in my oven. It's also a nice way to warm up the coach while cooking. If I ever feel the need to replace my microwave I can easily add a Convection/Microwave combo but retrofitting a gas oven could be problematic. Whatever works for you.

    As always... Opinions and YMMV.

  • Yes, yes, yes, and yes. We love ours, and use it just like a regular oven, without the need for a lighter or pilot lighter. Cooktop only, oven area has an additional drawer for storage. Would not consider any other option. We have cooked many full meals in ours, cakes, biscuits, roasts, casserols of all types. popcorn works good also. Cooks evenly, little need for rotation.

    Simple answer, Yes!

A convection microwave is 2 ovens in one. A electric convection oven like the oven in your range at home with an electric element, and a microwave oven like your microwave on the counter at home.

Depending on which oven you select it either microwaves your food or bake your food.

They are the best of other worlds. Have used our for over 15 years now in 2 MHs.
  • my daughter though she,d hate the convection oven built into the microwave ,after a few try,s she now loves it, would not go back to the oven,
