Diesel fuel filter priming pump

I'm am going to replace both of my fuel filters today, and install a priming pump on the engine mounted secondary. Will this allow me to install both filters dry, or do I have to fill the primary filter with fuel?

  • Lou,
That is what I was hoping to hear. If I try to install the secondary filter with fuel in it, half of the fuel will spill out because I have to tip it sideways trying to get it through all the apparatus that is in the way.
  • On my CAT C-7 I install both filters dry and manually pump until the handle is difficult to move. I then secure the handle (screw it into the housing) and start the engine. I've never had any starting issues using this method. Good luck.

  • The engine &/or chassis manual should have instructions. My Toyota diesels and one Cummins use the fill the filter method. The common rail Cummins has a key on / off sequence described in the manual that triggers the fuel transfer pump to prime the filter.

Better to fill filters and then pump 20 times to hopefully get the air out. I would have the filled filter ready to go back on quickly on your Cat engine.
  • I just put duct tape over the center hole of the filter and fill it with diesel fuel. Never had a spec of trouble with my C7 Cat. By blocking the center hole the fuel is than filtered, of course you have to remove the tape before installing.:)
  • I do the same as sch911.

With that said, Roland, I believe if you read your owners manual you will find a procedure to prime the filters without the need of adding a secondary pump. I've never done it, but going from memory here (which isn't saying much!), I believe all you need to do is cycle the key, without trying to start it or touching the throttle, and the pump will prime your filters. 10 cycles comes to mind, it may be more, it may be less, or I may be nuts all together, but I'd sure check before I went to the trouble of adding another pump.

Let us know how you make out please.
  • Don't know the answer but I just fill the new filters with clean fuel and install, seems easier doing it that way to me....
