Different Fuel Prices

Ok who can tell me which state has different diesel fuel prices at the commercial truck pumps than at the car pumps. I was out west and believe it was Arizona where the price per gallon was about .15 cents cheaper at the car lanes that at the truck lanes due to an additional tax that is added to the truck lanes. reason was that they were heavier and caused more damage to the roads. I remember going to the auto pumps to get fuel. Are there any other states that do that?

  • Diesel Fuel at Flying J (now Pilot Flying J) is always cheaper in the RV Lane than it is in the truck lane.

Truck Lane's require CASH (cold hard green backs) in order to get the lowest price.....i find it a total PIA to walk in, stand in line, hand over 500 bucks, obtain a receipt & then go back out and pump...only to have to come BACK in, stand in line & receive my balance....

Flying J's that have the RV lanes allow me to use my credit card or ATM card at the pump(s) (master/slave) for the same "cash" price....no hassle....other than having to swipe multiple times.

I won't stop at Flying J's that don't have an RV island.
  • Indiana is the opposite. Trucking companies pay a fuel/use tax directly to the State and do not have the tax at the pump. It is 7% that is applied to auto fuel. The big sign out front shows the truck price but the auto and RV pump is about 25 cents higher. Only commercial trucks are supposed to fuel at the truck pumps.

  • Virginia does, only it is not AT THE PUMP.

Virginia taxes all diesel fuel (save off-road, of course) the heavy truck rate at all pumps. But there is a rebate available to drivers of diesel vehicles weighing less than 8,500 lbs (don't quote me on that exact weight), meaning diesel cars, SUVs, and pickups. But to get it, you have to pay it, save the receipts, and fill out an application online. And yes, the plan was to make it enough of a pain in the butt to where most folks eligible for it either don't know about it or don't bother to apply for it.

After all that, and a couple months wait, they will send you a check for the (approximately) 10 cents a gallon difference between the heavy diesel tax rate and the light weight diesel rate.

And yes, with 3 qualifying vehicles in the family, we jump through those hoops. My last check from the state was about $45, almost enough to buy another tankful.
  • Yes, the area around Kingman, Az and major trucking routes out here, some stations do that. Shell is a biggee. All you have to do if you fuel at the truck lane, is go inside after. They will give you a paper to fill out with your license plate number, and they will give you the difference back right then.
  • were all being ripped off big time. fuel should be under $3.bucks a gal according to the stock market , oil goes down on the market,, up at the pump there not going to loose a dime.

OR diesel fuel tax is different than most states for commercial trucks. They are paying aprox $0.30/gallon directly to the state, not at the pump. No you cannot legally use the pumps with the reduced price.

Interesting. Not sure if true or not. I do know trucking companies get discounts depending on amount of gallons purchased. Autos get their discount immediately at the pump. I also know in some states prices vary depending on tourist volumn. In Cody, WY price is higher than in Powell, WY up the road a few miles that doesn't get tourists. They get fuel from same vendors.
