Driving Hwy 395 ..... Oregon to Nevada

Planning a trip in our 40 foooter this month (March) down to Lost Wages. Have never driven it before so not sure of it's "driver friendly" condition, hills, fueling, snow and rest areas. Appreciate your input!!

your best route is 58 over to 97 to Klamath falls then east on 139/299 to alturas.Ca then 395 south to reno,Take 80 east to 95 and 95 south to LV
    this is the shortest route

I have been on all of these highways, and would agree 100% with this route.

Just north of Bishop there is a gem of a campground off the highway about a mile.

Have a look at Brown's Millpond Campground.

  • Very pretty drive, but a bit longer and slower than going via; 20, 78, 95, 80, 305, 376, 95 (whew, I think I got those right...just Google it from Bend and it will pop up)

Depending how far you want to take 395, you could encounter snow between Topaz and Bishop.

    Safe Travels,
    Steve
  • Have driven it S to N several times with our rig and it is a nice scenic drive, for the most part. This time of the year you need to watch the weather as it can be anything from hot and sunny to heavy blowing snow. Are you staying on 395 south of Reno or getting on 95? 395 south of Reno can get very iffy this time of year and has some higher elevations to cross. You should enjoy the trip.
  • Nice easy drive. From Eugene you will have two passes. One over the cascades and another one between Lapine and Lakeview. Be sure to spend a night at Goose Lake state park. Really nice hidden gem of a park. Water and electric only! But they have a dump station and plenty of grass. Oops, Goose Lake won't be open in March.
