E450 Oil Filter

I picked up a 2007 Fleetwood Tioga 29V, E450 6.8L a couple months ago and did it's first oil change this past weekend. I had quite an ordeal with the oil filter because the FL-820S listed in the books did not fit. It had a no-name Mighty M500 oil filter which no one was able to cross reference. After quite a bit of Google searching I found it cross references to a FL-500S or FL-2055.

Any idea why this is using an odd filter? This filter is used on the Ford Mustang, Edge, Fusion, Taurus, F150-350, Escape and Flex. Although it fits, I'm concerned because it is a much smaller filter than the FL-820S listed in the books.

I guess the take-away here is NEVER start a project without all of the ingredients, and don't just buy without a source or cross reference.

Already knew I was OK with our own oil/filter change projects, but I wanted to understand what happened to be able to assist somebody else.

So, THANKS for providing the details!
  • Without seeing the actual adapter, it sounds like the original was changed out for some reason. But why they wouldn't replace it with an original equipment, I don't have any idea. From what I have read most if not all E450 Super Duty V-10's take the 820S filter. As far as the Mighty Filter goes, they are a jobber supply outfit that sells to garages, lube joints, etc. They have a good reputation.
  • The problem is they fit very differently. The 820S (or Fram PH2) have a much larger diameter gasket surface and the threads stick out of the adapter much further to reach into the filter. Mine has a smaller diameter gasket surface and the threads only stick out about an inch. My oil filter adapter looks very similar to a motorcycle design.
  • My 2008 Winnebago Outlook on a 2007 E-450 chassis uses Fram PH-2 filter.

But what hampered you with the combination of the 2006 or 2007 E450/V10 and FL820S?

Ours changes and fits just fine, but I'd like to be able to warn anybody I might be helping that the listed filter might not be right.

Only issue I have in changing ours is that its vertical position, and the oil cooler adapter above it, add up to much more oil coming out than I'm used to having to catch.

Why didn't the FL820S fit? Threads? Gasket? Position? Interference?

I just don't get it. On our 2002 E450/V10, the 820 mounts straight up from the bottom in the open.

In fact, I don't understand the emphasis on the silicone anti-drain-back valve. The filter sits there gasket surface up, like an open bucket. Oil has no place to drain from the filter into. Filter's the lowest point of the system.

The FL820S is used on my 2004 F150, it sits sideways and is really hard to get on and off so the silicone anti drain feature may not be needed on the Ford V10 but it is on other motors.

  • Ford recommends the FL-820S on the V-10 to help keep oil in the engine when not running. The filter has a silicone valve built in to do this.

Do you not have clearance to put this filter on? Seems like it should fit since its OEM but you may have something different causing it to not spin up?

    From the manufacturer:
Silicone anti-drain back valves help prevent oil from draining out of the filter and engine when the engine is not running and resist the aging effects that an engine’s high heat can cause.
  • I think a trip to your Ford dealer with your VIN and other pertinent information is in order. The parts department there should set you on the right track.

Ford used the same filter on just about all of their models for many years (Fram PH1 or equivalent). Then in 2001 I found that I had an odd ball filter on my 2000 F150.

I don't know if the PH1 would fit your E450, but it seemed like big filter on the 2.3l 4 cylinder in the Mustang.

I know Fram used to have cross list that would give you the stats of a given filter. Size of thread, pressure relief, gasket size, etc. Guys used it to find automotive filters to fit their bikes and quads, because they could get filters at half the price of the specialty filters.

You may be able to find a bigger filter using the Fram list. If that doesn't get you a filter you are comfortable with, you could put a remote kit on and a larger filter hanging off the frame rail.
