Electric Pigtails

New RV'er with a Class A motor home. It uses a 30 amp power.
Can someone please explain going "down" from a 50a, and "up" from a 15a.
I understand I can use a pigtail, 50a to my 30a with no problem.
Just want to make sure that this will not "fry" my motor home.
Have not been able to find out this info in my manual.

Also, when in a place (like a state park) that only has a standard electrical receptacle, using a pigtail to go from 15a to my 30a, will this be enough power to run my single AC (without any other appliance's)?

Thanks for your advice & knowledge.

If you want to plug your 30 amp coach into a lesser circuit like a home 15 amp plug you use the same type adapter but in this case the home circuit breaker will limit the draw and the home breaker will trip if you try to exceed the limit of the plug.

While this is technically true it is NOT a good thing to do.

If the A/C gets real close to a 15 amp draw, cords and connections tend to overheat BEFORE the breaker will trip. The old weathered outlet at the pole will likely be the first thing to go.

I tried that at home and it did not work out. The breaker tripped after a few minutes and the outlet was hot.

I think you should avoid campgrounds that provide only a 15 amp circuit or run your generator when you need A/C.
  • Do NOT buy/use this type...they have a tendency to overheat

    Buy dogleg style
    50A to 30A.......good to have
If power pedestal has 50A receptacle most likely has 30A too but sometimes the 30A Receptacle is busted up/worn out so the 50A to 30A adapter is good to use. (only one Hot leg feeds the 30A side so you get full 30A capacity and your RV Main 30A CB is your protection)

30A to 15A......use for those times when regular household outlet is only source of AC power
Good for running converter (charging battery) and maybe A/C Unit
  • If you need to plug your 30 amp coach into a 50 amp plug this will not blow up anything. A 50 amp plug has 2 legs of power and when you plug in your adapter to convert from a 50 amp receptacle (not step up or down) to your 30 amp plug it will only use 1 of the 2 legs given you the exact same setup as if you had plugged into a 30 amp plug. Your coach will have its own built in breakers that will keep you from overloading any of your circuits.
If you want to plug your 30 amp coach into a lesser circuit like a home 15 amp plug you use the same type adapter but in this case the home circuit breaker will limit the draw and the home breaker will trip if you try to exceed the limit of the plug.
You are never going to see more or less than 120V with either circuit which is why I said you are not stepping anything up or down.
  • The adapters work fine and won't fry anything. AC is questionable on 15a. If it does run the plug may get hot.
