Electric steps

I have a one step electric step assembly, I can hear the clicking when door is closed switch is activating but step will not move at all. Please advise, thanks.

  • There should be two fuses for the step. One is control and the other provides power to the unit. Check the power fuse.
Check ground connection under the step. There is two there also.
Be careful the step may move!
  • If it's been sitting for awhile either out or in, the moving parts need lubricating. Especially the ball style conection on the push arm from the motor. You likely have to get on your back and reach up from under the step to access it. WD40 works good as a starter. When the step is free and can be moved with one person pulling on the step and the other opening and closing the door. When is is operating correctly wipe the extra wd40 off and spray with a silicone lubricant ( dries and lubs the joints and doesn't attract dirt sand etc..)
NB: The other problem could be you have the motor running or the key in aux position. There is an over-ride system that will automaticly close the step as a safety feature so you don't drive away with the step out. Check this as well when the step is working again to ensure the switches are ok.

Hope this helps a bit anyway.

  • is the under step LIGHT working ? sounds like you've got power to the step if you hear clicking - but i'd confirm that.

SOMETIMES - if they sit for a long time the motors can stick....a gentle tap on the motor w/ a hammer may help....then you should be certain to clean the exposed gears and lube them well.
  • Steps stop working for 4 basic reasons. The most popular one is that their is an electrical issue - usually low battery or bad step ground wire. Step binding associated with lack of lubrication. Bad controller and lastly bad motor or gear component.

Check your battery condition, clean the ground wire connection, disconnect the step from the motor assembly and lube - while disconnected test the controller by opening/closing the door and see if the motor operates as it should. During this test if the motor sounds like it's working but you don't see the swing arm moving then it's likely you have a broken gear in the motor .. replace the gear or replace the motor - lots of threads on how to do that.
  • While activating the door switch, WHACK the motor with a hammer. You may have to do this 4 or 5 times. IF the motor activates, the motor is bad, replace it. Lube the step linkages when replacing the motor. With the motor removed the step assbly should freely retract and extend using one finger. If not lube until it does. Doug
