Electrical Outlets turn on/off constantly

Just bought a 1987 Coachman Leprechaun. I have it connected in my driveway to a known good outlet in my garage. If I connect any device (phone charger for example) to any outlet it turns on and off constantly (5 second intervals?).

Any suggestions on what I could look at to troubleshoot/resolve the issue?

Thanks!

  • Strange, thought I posted a response.

    Maillemaker:
Corroded connectors, loose rivets, fan wasn't working. Spent 10 minutes on it and now its working!

The old owners used it as a guest room, and only owned it for two years so I'm not surprised there's a few things. Electrical is fixed, and the water leak is coming from the bathroom so I bet I'll discover a loose fitting and that problem will be solved. So far, I'm hoping we'll be through the best of it shortly. As it is, I'm in this thing for less than $6k so even if I spend $3k on it, I'll be happy. Generator doesn't work, but I'll put $$ that its either the fuel pump or just needs the carb cleaned. One day at a time =)
  • Wow water leaks, electrical outlets, converter, etc., sounds like our old orphaned '79 "Higgins Delta" 23 footer. We were noobs, bought on impulse for 13K and spent 8K more on it the first year, eventually got some real use out of it and much later sold it for $4500. Old rigs can be a real adventure with amateur wiring to figure out, goofy acting furnaces and water heaters, etc., etc. Never did make overhead area structural repairs, always had some mold smell.

If you need to replace the converter the Progressive Dynamics PD9245 is a good easy replacement. US brand house batteries are supposedly as good as Trojan T-105's
  • Actually, converter was going to be my guess, but looks like you got it figured out before I logged on. Mine did exactly the same thing, also the lights dimmed & brightened repeatedly.
  • Glad to hear you fixed the problem. That was a strange one.
  • My first thought is an auto reset circuit breaker.

Can you check the voltage at the circuit breaker in the power distribution panel to see if it is turning off and on. If not there I would suspect the GFI.

Do you have some sort of a surge guard on the unit?

The 'every 5 seconds' statement makes me think that there is some sort of automatic protection that is detecting a fault, shutting off, and then resetting.

Any surge protector I've had has a 120 second wait built in after detecting a fault.

  • Sounds like a loose wire, loose fuse.. something loose! (Not to be confused with lose)
