Exterior side lighting???

We have years of experience with TT's and FW's but are new to the Class A family. Today Hubby had to take the RV out to get new tires and left while it was still dark outside. He said that he couldn't see a thing down either side of the RV and couldn't tell how close he was to the ditch pulling out of the driveway and had some other issues until he got to where he was going. He said that he wants to put some kind of lighting on the outside that he could hook up that would shine down the side and onto the ground when needed.

Has anyone else had this problem and if so, what lighting did you use to solve this problem?

He also said that the backup lights are non existent also!

I told Hubs I'd go to the forum and ask for help! :)
  • You didn't say how old your Holiday Rambler was or if you had docking lights on the sides. Tiffin puts dock lights on their rigs, but in my opinion they might as well save their money. The dock lights point rearward and are good for backing into a spot at night, and we all know how many RV'ers do that. When we are traveling, as opposed to sightseeing, we usually start at 3:30 or 4 in the morning and have similar problems to the ones your husband experienced with the ditch. While at Quartzsite last year I picked up a set of lights similar to these. Although these are not the same brand as I have, it looks like they'll work about as well. I installed them in the side of the front cap just at the rear edge of the cap. VERY bright and work well.
  • Could you install a mercury light in your yard -- if-- most times driving in the dark you would be leaving from your own yard. We don't need exterior lighting as we only travel during daylight.

I don't drive a class A, but have had to back in my little TT more than a few times after dark, and it's unnerving not being able to see.

Armchair attorneys on this site will cry foul of DOT regulations regarding lighting on a highway vehicle but I'm not scared. I installed a three off road LED floodlights on my trailer, connected to a remote control. Two shine back behind the trailer and light everything up back there like it was mid-afternoon. In the front, one more makes hooking and unhooking in the dark much easier.

I was considering installing two more under the trailer near the front, pointed back, so the tires, axle, plumbing, stairs, etc could be brightly lit if need be.
  • He's looking for some type of light that will be installed close to the front and will illuminate down the side of the unit.
  • One trick I've used a few times is to put out some battery powered pop-up LED lanterns (such as are about two or so inches in diameter and an inch thick when collapsed and are inexpensively available many places) at key points as markers. They don't do a great job of lighting up the environment enough to see from the cab, but they are fine to provide a point reference for the corner of the picnic table or the mailbox post or whatever.

I would mount these on each side near your mirrors...$15. I added them to the back of my MH as backup lights.

^ this - cheap and lots of light

mounting on the mirrors is a neat idea - would give good light for accessing storage bays, etc

mounted just behind the front wheel mud flaps, pointing back and out would give good illumination of any hazards the back wheels could fall into. hopefully headlights are giving enough light at the front of the rig?

Installing some on the front bumper, pointed wide might be nice, kind of like cornering lights?
