Ford f53 chassis Dasboard parking brake light

I have a 1999 Ford F53 Holiday Rambler 36' gas motorhome. The issue is that the parking brake light will not light in the dashboard, but the real issue is that the HWH levelers will not activate because it does not recognize that the parking brake is activated. The parking brake is working fine. I looked but cannot find any type of switch. I need help. Thanks!!
  • I know this is an older topic, but it's still useful. I had this same problem, and thanks to the advice I took a closer look and found the switch.

I had some contact cleaner ready, but when I looked, I could see the switch, but I couldn't see where the contacts were in order to spray. I did see a lot of crusty dust - 20 years worth.

So what I tried first was compressed air to blow the dust crud out, and it worked!

So try things in this order:
    1 - compressed air
    2 - contact cleaner
3 - replace the switch yourself
    4 - take it to a shop
  • If things seem impossible, look for an easier way. Remember, their techs must be able to this job quickly and easily. There are three (3) bolts holding the brake assembly in place. Remove them, pull the assembly down to expose it. It may look like there are four, but the top one closest to you does not hold the assembly. The top bolt is just a bit behind that one. The switch is right there, a snap to replace. My switch cost $16 from Ford. Too cheap to mess with the old one.
  • SUCCESS!!! Thanks to all for the quick responses. Five or six squirts of WD-40 and a few cycles of the e-brake pedal and the light came on and the jacks worked!!!. My first post to this forum, but it will not be my last.

PS The switch is really not in a very accessible spot. Taking out the driver's seat helped.

  • I got down in there recently and got stuck. Wife had to pull on my legs and drag me out.
  • Contact cleaner worked for me. getting to it was the tricky part for my big old body.
  • The switch is easy to replace and not expensive if you can access it. I've had mine off several times while trouble shooting other things, I have a drivers door for access so its a bit easier for me.
  • You can just barely see the switch from under the dash, behind the e-brake pedal. I found that spraying some contact cleaner onto the copper contacts with a long nozzle seemed to work.
  • I've got a 96 Bounder that has the same issue intermittently. Seems the more i use it, the better it works. Is definitely the switch, but I just cant seem to get at it......or anything else under the dash on the drivers side(other than what i can get at by tilting the dash up and out of the way)
  • There is a switch mounted just behind the parking brake pedal. Its a bit difficult to access, but they usually just need the exposed contacts cleaned.
