Ford F53 V10 cruise control

New to this forum and relativly new to RV's.
Our cruise control recently (Mar 2012) started acting up on a return trip to Minneapolis from Phoenix.
It would kick out as we were traveling on the interstate. I would reactivate it and it would run for a while on cruise and kick off again. It would then not turn back on after several attemps until after we were stopped for a while at a rest area or overnight. It would work again for a while, Then would quit working. On recent trip to Iowa and back it worked for maybe 2 hours out of a total of 11 hours traveling round trip.
Any suggestions? This is a 2006 33'Gulfstream Independence on a Ford F53 chassis with a V10. Only have 17,800 miles on unit.
Regards and Thank You

  • There is a recall notice out, I think it has to do with gear shift lever. I'd be more inclined to bring it to a Ford Dealer and have look at, if it is 2012 you will be covered. JM2C's Bill

I keep reading about a recall. Not sure what it is. Please enlighten me.
Have checked connection at master cylinder. Disconnected and reconected several times. Seems ok to me.
Where is brake light switch located? Doubt it is problem but will check anyway.

Shooter, The switch is under the dash, where you have to stand on your head and use a mirror to see it. (not fun) It's where two pieces of the brake linkage join with a pin.
The recall was because of brake fluid leakage from the secondary cruise control disengage switch, located on the master cylinder. Ford added a short wiring harness with a fuse to reduce chance of fire.

  • Probably not your stop light switch. Ford switched to a clevis mount stop light switch on F53s in 1995 to eliminate the cruise control disengage problem, created by the old piston activated switch.

  • Mine quit working when I went into limp home mode and it turned out to be the gas cap was a bit loose. Tightened it and everything worked again. I doubt that is your issue because you had it over a long period. Sounds like a loose connection as others have suggested.
  • Cruise operated off with the brake light switch. Hit a bump and off it goes. Also check the connection under the hood at the master cylinder. Has the recall been done?
