Ford V10 engine
Looking to purchase around a 36 ft class a motorhome to go full timing and wondering how the ford V10 is holding up. Will be towing a vehicle with it also. Please give good and bad points.

I've owned two V10s over the course of last 10 years - a 310 HP V10 in an Excursion SUV we had previously that towed our 34' RV trailer for 8 years, and now a 362HP V10 in our 36' MH for almost 2 years now. Both were/are solid as a rock, never have given any problems at all. Newer V10 with the redesigned cylinder 3 valve cylinder heads Ford came out with around 2005 is noticeably more powerful as well. The V10 in our MH seems to have more 'throat' to it than the one in the Excursion did (although the old one was plenty powerful, too).
Like Effy said, take care of this engine, and it will do just fine for you, and outlast any MH built on it.nelson wrote:
X-2, I've owned both Chevy & Ford motors in RV's and both were good motors. And, I've towed 4 down behind both engines with no problems.

- You will hear some say more noisey than others. I think some manufacturers put more insulation in the engine cover. I have a 34' MH V10 and tow a Jeep. My MH has a 4.3 axle. I had 2 F250s with V10s. Still have 1 besides MH. F250 has 4.10 axle and tows very well. I had an F250 V10 with a 3.75 axle and it was a little week for towing. In MHs the larger size MHs have a 6.2 axle. Ford got it right with the V10.
- Just a hair under 100k miles on our 99 V10 and it runs perfect. It's a damn good engine and probably about the last thing I would worry about failing on the coach.
- We loved ours but for full timing I would be more concerned about the layout and size.
You need room to store your "stuff"
We went from a gas 35 to a diesel 36 and the difference is great, with full wall slide outs today you can really increase the square footage - The class C we had prior to our current class A had 136,000 kms (84,500 miles) and never had a single problem. The Ford V-10 just can't be beat.
Our current class A also has a V-10. 7.9 mpg towing 2010 Ford Escape to the east coast in 2012. - 99, 38 foot here and like the rest have stated , still going strong.
