Ford V10 revisions

It's difficult to find actual information about the performance of the "new" V10. Most people who are experienced with driving motorhomes (or other heavy vehicles) agree that torque matters and HP is less relevant. For what ever reasons (marketing?), rv manufacturers focus on HP.

The "new" (not sure if it is new) V10 had 365 HP, but now it has 320. Seems like less power. BUT, it has higher torque at lower rpm. True?

I also read an opinion that the measure peak HP at a lower rpm now and that the actual HP is unchanged. Do you really care about HP level at rpm so high that it sounds like it will explode?

So, assuming that peak HP is irrelevant, does the new V10 have more torque, the same, or less than before?

Is it really new, or did they just change how they measure it?

    At this point in time....what difference does it make? The V-10 is a powerful motor and stone dependable.

    The "V-10" is also meant to be a high RPM engine, don't worry it has an RPM limiter so won't cause itself any harm. Jim.

    There are a number of reasons why makers measure output at different RPM levels but The V-10 is capable of making 360+ HP and 450+ peak torque which when geared properly is quite capable and reliable.

    There are more factors than just HP numbers which are for the most part just hype anyway. You have to factor in the transmission as well as the rear end ratio. I don't care about numbers but in the real world I pulled a fifth wheel with a 2008 F-350 with the V-10 (365 HP) and now have the new V-10 (320) with the new 6 speed transmission in my class A. Even though the Class A weighs more; it pulls the same hills easier and faster and also gets slightly better gas mileage. How much is the engine and how much is the transmission I can't say and don't really care.
    I was always told that HP is for speed and torque is for power. With our RVs I feel that power is more important.

    HP is what matters. But it has to be usable HP. Peak HP is meaningless if it happens at an RPM that can't be used for your given speed. The "new" V10 makes less peak hp, but more horespower away from the peak, which makes it more usable. That, and the 6-speed makes more available too.

    Finally.... I strongly suspect part of the difference is how they measure HP. Ford can "down-grade" the HP rating by selecting an RPM where all the EPA requirements are met. The "new" V10 has to meet the new EPA green house gas restrictions for medium duty trucks.

    From all reports, the 320 hp V10 actually performs better than the 365 version. Also, in the F650 the 320hp version got a bump to 37,000 pounds GCWR from the 33,000 that the 365 version was rated for.

    I doubt the F650 being re rated on the GCWR has anything to do with the new motor HP/rpm rating

    I think it has more to do with the Optional 29000GVW package now offered over the standard 26000LB one

    I owned a 2004 Georgetown with the 2-valve V10 and 3-speed tranmission with overdrive. I really liked it, but it did struggle in the hills. So I put a Banks system on it and a Brazels Ultrapower tune. Night and day inprovement compared to stock. I was so happy with the improvements. Fast forward 12 years and I just got a new 2016 Allegro with the 3-valve, 320 HP V10 with the new Ford 6-speed tranmission. So far, I am thoroughly impressed by this new motor/tranmission combination. In stock form, it's so much more driveable than the 2004, even after the mods to the former. So I go along with the previous comment. The V10 is a great motor, and of the long line of V10's, this year's is by far the best.

    It of course now has six gears where it was five. I really like it from power point of view it is about the same but a lot quieter. It rolls at 70 much easier as it is rolling at lower rpm's. From strictly driving it is a real imppvement over the 2015 I had. I did not mind the 2015 but am really happy with the new six speed.

    I personally would never buy a 39 ft(38,10 inch) 3 slide motorhome with only a 460 ft lb torque motor and then add a toad on top of this
    maybe on the prairies but no way in the mountains

    Georgetown 364ts owner with new six speed...don't have anything to compare it to but 65 mph is just over 2k rpms. Up hills if press a bit will downshift at about 3k rpms, and if really hammer it or in mountains 4K.

    F150 for a toad on moderate slope and no problem stopping or going. Happy with it all the way around. No complaints.
