Generator Meter

Hello all,
Has anyone bought a used RV and found out the generator meter wire was cut?
I bought a rental unit from Cruise America, I was testing the generator and noticed the meter was not clicking. First I opened the generator cover and noticed something that said it was last serviced in January 2012 at 443 hours. The meter in the RV says 443.0 hours..... Two years later, so I unscrewed the control panel and what do I find? The second wire for the meter was cut and tucked away. So I have no clue when the generator was actually serviced last or how many hours it truly has on it. Very annoyed. Its still within my 30 days so I am going to get answers

  • I think you have a case for fraud. Go talk to the people nicely, and if they don't coming with good answers and lots of them then make the next call to your state's attorney general's office.

  • Just minor things are wrong. A hinge on one of the overhead cabinet is broken and the cab door seal on the passenger side is coming off. I sent an email asking about service records and his response was:
CRUISE AMERICA HAS CONFIDENTIAL PROPRIETARY AGREEMENTS WITH ITS VENDORS, THUS WE CANNOT GIVE OUT SERVICE RECORDS. WE BACK UP OUT RV'S WITH A WARRANTY INSTEAD.
Copied exactly from his email. I don't have any negative comments, I just wish they caught it.

Let us know what "answers" you get. And post here.

Just change the oil and new air filter. Or maybe I should say have "authorized" dealer do it. If you bought extended warranty read and study the fine print on doing stuff yourself it may void warranty because your not "authorized" dealer.

Also check 12 volt power port in dash. Many times CA cuts them because if they didn't many renters would try to run a mega watt elec station from dash plug. Supposed to re-connect before selling but overlooked sometimes.

Anything else wrong that you've found yet?

If you have not done so already do a search on "rental" in search bar, quit a bit about them with good info.

Also notice most negative comments are from people that never owned one before. Not sticking up for x-rentals we have one.

It could have been cut by a renter. Doesn't CA charge for generator use ?

Yes they charge $3.50 per hour. It is not in their interest to cut the wire. This should have been caught on the walk thru when you bought it.
In my case they had all systems running and I watched the hour meter move and also had a complete service record that detailed everything INCLUDING generator hours at each service. If you didn't get that I would be very upset and would be back there asap and get some answers.

Someone somewhere really dropped the ball. One reason I bought from where I did.
  • It could have been cut by a renter. Doesn't CA charge for generator use ?
  • It is illegal to cut odometer cables on cars, shouldn't it be illegal to purposely cut hour meters for generators?
  • I suspected CA did it, and it doesn't look like the generator has been serviced even though they claim they did a 110 point inspection. The air filter is caked and the oil is low
  • Highly unlikely that one of the renters cut the wire, so must have been done by CA. Begs the question "What else are they hiding?"
