Generator Problem

I have a Onan 7K Generator in my 2006 Sunvoyager that has been working great. I traveled from Fl to Sc and every time I stopped at a rest area I fired it up and it worked fine. When I got to the first exit in Sc I cranked it up and no power to the coach. It cranks up and runs with no problems but will not switch power to the coach. I checked for fuses, breakers and the breakers on the unit both seem fine. I even contacted Gulfstream to find out if there was a fuse or disconnect I was missing and they suggested a transfer switch on the generator. I am about 80 miles from the closest repair place and am open to any suggestions of anything I could look for or try. I really do not need it right now but I would like to get it working in case of a power outage when I get back home in 2 weeks. Any suggestions or input is appreciated. I only have a wiring diagram for the generator but if anyone knows where I could get a parts breakdown of the generator would also be great info. Thanks in advance for any help.
  • is the start / stop switch flashing ? count the flashes and pauses to determine any trouble codes.
  • If you have checked the generator breaker (located on the generator itself) then it is likely that you have a failed transfer switch. A prior poster suggested that you tap on the transfer switch. That may work. The transfer switch is usually located near the main breaker panel where your main power comes in. Unless you have combined EMS system they are not too hard to replace and shouldn't be that expensive.
  • Try locating your transfer switch and tap on it with a wooden handle with the generator running. If you get power you have found your problem and probably will need to replace it.
  • I have had the same problem with our 4Kw Onan, and it was suggested (by the great people on this forum) that I check the reset button on the generator. I didn't even know one existed, but was able to find it, and reset it....system worked fine after that.

Maybe, your larger unit has a similar button. I believe it was on the electrical end of the unit (not the engine side), and it took awhile to locate it.

Next step, if that doesn't work, would be to try and see if you have voltage coming out of the generator to the transfer switch. I don't have that switch (I have to plug in my shore plug into an outlet from the generator), but if you have the wiring diagram, you should be able to locate and test it, if you have a meter.

I take it that you are not getting any power to the A/C, so it's not just an tripped GFI outlet in the bathroom, causing the TV not work, right? Hope you find the problem....you came to the right place, lots of very knowing people here.....just they may all be watching "The Walking Dead" in a few minutes! :B

    Good luck
