generator wiring problems

Hi everyone, I am working on my grandpas rv, trying to get it fixed so he can sell it. It is a 1994 Fleetwood Pace arrow

There is not enough power going to the generator to start it, here is what I know. The generator will start with a battery jumper pack attached to it. So the generator isn't the problem. With the rv plugged into an outlet the solenoid on the generator will buzz when trying to start it. That tells me it's not getting enough power. Then with the rv unplugged from the outlet, the generator will do nothing when trying to start it.
I've cleaned all the connections, I really don't know what to do now. Some help would be awesome!

Thanks
  • Start by removing grounds from any cables in the system, cleaning their connection points on the metal frame, inspecting the ground connector & replacing the cables where warranted. Clean and water the battery cells. Buy a digital voltmeter if you don't have one already ($8).

With all the grounds being good, than measure the battery voltages at various points in the system and list them here, starting across the batteries. If any battery is under 12 volt, charge it up before continuing with the tests.

Batteries charged up, disconnect from shore power, start engine, measure chassis battery voltage. Wait a couple minutes for the timer to engage the crossover solenoid and then measure the voltage across the house batteries. Record the voltages. They should be above 13 volts. Have a rubber mallet nearby to whack solenoids that need it.

Stop the engine, and plug the RV into shore power. Repeat the voltage tests. You should have 13+ volts across both sets, the house and chassis sets. If you have it on the house but not the chassis batts, there's your problem. There isn't an auxiliary charger for your chassis batt, which is typical for 10's of thousands of RVs. $20 at Walmart.

    Let us know.

As far as your genset not starting, check your dash for a AUX or Emergency Start Switch. Push that while trying to start the genset. If it starts, you just have a discharged battery.

It won't start with the rv running either.
I hooked up the battery jumper pack to the house batteries and that didn't work either. Could it still be the batteries since that didn't work?

of course it wont if the batterys are STONE dead they need a certain amount of voltage first
sounds like either a very bad cable connection or the batterys are just plain shot(no good)
When MH is pluged into SP or engine running do u have any lights that work in the MH
Is the 12V house disconnect switch on???????
  • When I had starting problems I had battery's checked and I thought I checked all connections to make sure they were all good. I re-checked all wires. Turned out I was not making a good enough connection to solenoid with a tiny wire. Not the battery cables but a little thing. It was a "spade" type connection not making enough contact. I found out by pushing start button and wiggling the wires one by one.

very very simple either check connections+water them+hand charge the batterys that start the generator or replace them;;; end of story
  • Did you check the house batteries?

Will the generator start when the engine is running?
