Genset dipstick threads stripped

I had what could have been a catastrophic failure. My Onan/Cummins 4000 genset comes with a plastic dipstick ( as I am sure most of them do). Anyway, has anyone had issues with the threads stripping? Mine has become completely stripped and on a recent trip the dipstick actually came out and blew oil everywhere. Thank goodness I noticed it before it ran dry. Now I need to get a replacement. Anyone else have this issue? it seems to be prety soft plastic in a fine threaded aluminum fill point. Almost seems like a recipe for failure.
  • It's not a recipe for failure if you don't crossthread the dipstick. Measure the dipstick opening and get a pipefitting, the threads are standard or get a new plastic dipstick. You might want to consider having the generator engine flushed to get all the plastic thread pieces out of the oil. That's probably where they all went, down into the oil.
  • No. I have not had a problem with the oil fill dip stick.
    Threads very easy.
  • I can see if someone got it cross threaded and then tried to force it in they could possibly strip the threads. I've never had a problem with mine, and it threads very easily as they are pretty coarse threads. I would definitely not call it a "recipe for failure". Would you rather the dipstick be threaded with hardened steel, so that when you force it in cross threaded it stripped the aluminum threads of the generator? That's a recipe for failure, and I would much rather have the plastic threads of the dipstick fail. I'm sure it's a cheap replacement part. The good news is had the generator run dry, it would have shut down due to low oil pressure.

There is a chance I cross threaded at one time. sometimes it catches well and others not so much. I do need a new one for sure. So maybe it's just me and my goof up. Wasn't sure if anyone else had the same issue.
  • When putting dip stick back on. Turn it back about a half turn. Than turn to tighten.
When back threading. You can usually feel the trip breads drop in place. Than it should screw in very easy.

Same method we used when coupling fire hose. Before quick connects.
  • Stop in at Beckley's Camping Cntr and order one. They are a Onan dealer. Or if you want a strictly generator type dealer, stop at Critical Power, Inc. in Mount Airy. They will need you model/spec number.
  • I'll only add that when the new one shows up take the old one in with you and lay them side by side. Make sure the end of the dipstick to the top of the threads is the exact same distance on both of them. It never stops amazing me how many times this isn't the case even though you ordered what you thought was an "exact" replacement.
  • Just consider your good luck it was the plastic threads that are messed up. :)
